Science Department The purpose of the Science Courses are to provide stu- dents with a basic knowledge of, and a liking for the fun- damental sciences of the natural world through the study of general science, biology, chemistry and physics. Courses are designed to meet future requirements of stu- dents who terminate their formal education at the high school level and for students who plan to enter college. In development of their objectives, the staff attempts: To train the student to think for himself. To develop his ability, to interpret his surroundings to himself, and to adapt them with greater ease to his needs. To Create a desire to pursue scientific inquiry beyond the second level, either in a college or in everyday life. General Science, is offered for students who need one more credit in order to graduate. Biology, generally to tenth graders, is the traditional study of formal botany and Zoology. Emphasis is placed upon the understanding of life processes. Chemistry and Physics, are elective courses for juniors and seniors, primarily directed to students who desire to continue in fields of scientific study in college of industry. Chemistry provides students with a basic knowledge of the composition of matter through the study of the ele- ments of nature and with their inter-action. Physics pro- vides the student with describe all physical phenomena, of how they evolved, and scope and limitations. Practical laboratory experiments and procedures in all courses are used to insure qualified students desiring to enter other scientific fields. Mr. J. Social Studies Department All courses in the Social Studies Department are aimed directly at the goal of building competent citizenship for our democratic society. To achieve this goal required courses in U.S. and Vir- ginia History and Government provide a background and the fundamental concepts for active participation in every day life. An elective course in World History broadens the stu- dents outlook of cultural concepts and their interactions. Either Economics, International Relations or Problems of Democracy is studied in connection with U.S. and Vir- ginia Government. Each course offers the possibility for the application of government concepts in that particular area. Personal Finance is an elective offered via television.
