Cheedeaders The Health and Physical Education Department of Norview High School is composed of nine staff members. Five men and four women. Each member ofthe depart- ment has a major in physical education. The department is divided so that girls are in health one week while the boys are in physical educationg the next week the classes alternate. This organization permits maximum use of all teaching stations by both boys and girls. An instructor is assigned to driver training. He is in charge ofthe multi car system used here at Norview, in which eivht cars are used with a student instructor and D. . . . three beginning students in each car. The instructor con- trols the cars by two way radios from a tower. The health department is designed so that there is no repetition of subject matter and the course of study is de- signed to give as much practical information to the stu- dent realizing that this will be the last opportunity for most ofthe students to secure health information for dai- ly living. Physical education classes are designed to in- crease strength and endurance of each pupil accordinv to his own physical capabilities and body make up and at the same time develop skills in activities which will carry over value for sports which can be enjoyed in later life. Foreign Languages i'Far away places and strange sounding namesn might well be the theme song of the approximately eight hundred students who yearly launch their career into the first through fourth year of French, Spanish, Latin or into first through third year of German. From every available nook and crevice of the building comes the sound of Happy Talk as teacher and student drill on the aural-oral skills which will as- sure the competence, fluency and measurable success of the student in his chosen language. Cultivation of, an interest in, and an appreciation for the language and en- deavors of its people are explored. Preparation not only for college entrance but for understanding of the people around him are stressed. Linguistic ability is not the ultimate goal, just reasonable mastery from which the spark for upeople to people understanding is ignited.
