NORTON PUBLIC LIBRARY NORTON, MASS. 02766 SOJOURTM 87 4.. 1 4 4 7 - igh School t Norton, Massachusetts DEDICATION Mrs. Debra Sweeney, advisor and friend to the Class of ' 87, has helped all of us in countless ways. Her enthusiasm and willingness to help will long be remembered by all members of the Class of ' 87. Whenever an individual needed help, she was always there to lend a helping hand; whenever the class needed help, she was always willing to work endless hours on our behalf. She guided us through dances, fundraisers, the prom, the spaghetti supper, the play, and many other activities; she stood by us when we needed her support to save Purple Key and acted as our ad- vocate in dealing with administrators and other faculty members. In addition to her understan- ding, work, and dedication, Mrs. Sweeney ' s golden smile and cheerful outlook are a tremen- dous asset to Norton High School, and the Class of ' 87 is proud to dedicate Sojourn 87 to Mrs. Debra Sweeney. APPRECIATION m rmm In addition to Mrs. Sweeney, our other class advisors have given us an enorm amount of help and support throughout our four years at Norton High School. Mi Maher, Mr. Leddy, and Mr. and Mrs. Nuttall have come up with countless ideas for fundraisers, pulled us through a successful prom in our junior year, pushed us through a super spaghetti supper in our senior year, and stood by us proudly in our battle for the reinstatement of Purple Key. These busy people have also withstood the frustra- tions of unpaid dues, fundraiser flops, and all the little annoying details behind our many plans and events. We, the Class of ' 87, wish to show them our heartfelt apprecia- tion for all they have done to make our class one of the best to come through Norton High School. Without them, our class would be just another group of students; with our advisors, we have an identity and a group personality that is totally unique. ■Prom! Show: The Cosby Show Comic Strip: Garfield Group: Bon Jovi THE HANDS OF TIME When we entered high school, a clock was created It was a symbol of the years awaited. As the hands of time began to tu rn We were only freshmen and had much to learn. We were all very timid when we walked through the door, What we saw was exciting and made our hearts soar. Being aware we had four years to complete We studied hard and tried our best, for we had goals to meet. We made it through a successful first year, We made many more friends who became very dear. Our first year of high school had come and gone We knew by the clock it was time to move on. We had to start all over again A new year, a new notebook, a new pencil and pen. But now we were Sophomores, feeling more at ease. With three years to go, time would tease. Our Junior year came — upperclassmen at last We never thought school could be such a blast. There were more places to go and more things to do More cars on the road, and the drivers were you. Wanting to be Seniors, we had nothing to fear We were so happy at the end of the year. It took a long time, but our three years had passed Now it was time to move on to our last. 60 Then we were Seniors, ahead of them all Setting good examples, keeping order in the hall. With many things to do, good grades to maintain, And applications to fill, it was hard to stay sane. The hands of time kept ticking away Getting us closer to our graduation day. Anxious to graduate, we kept our eyes on the clock It finally told us it was time to walk. Now it is time to go our separate ways. But we will always remember our high school days. It ' s a big world out there with much to achieve. We can do whatever we want if we just believe. As we graduate on this stage tonight, There may be anxiety, there may be fright. There may be great moments, like we ' ve had these past years There may be happiness, there may be tears. We ' ve shared together — both good times and bad We will never forget the years we have had. When the hands of time move on, you ' ll see That the class of ' 87 is the best that can be. — Kim Robbins Senior Class Will Dcbra Aftosmes: To Dina A. — good luck with Eric and your life; To Mousie — a new squeaker; To Holli and Kris; — a life long supply of crutches and knee braces; To Bernic — a new roommate; To Mike; — a new car; To Mom and Dad — thanks and all of my love; To the class of ' 87 ' — good luck Jana Allen: Wal — my everlasting love; Jen — my friendship, the Miami Beach life and Dan Marino; Renee — Doug, the Gondola and Candy Lips; Joe — 7th period rap sessions; Robin — the perfect prom dress; Eric — a challenging tennis match; Ray — a Supra; Paul — potato chips; all my friends — good memories Renee Alphonse: Mark — an everlasting relationship together and all my love forever; Karen — a half a brain, a smaller self-image and a friendship forever; Lisa — just tell me the truth; Jill — Beatrice; Shannon — no more ugly days and best of luck always; Diane — more complaints; Eric — a lack of sense of humor Sean Anderson: To Paul — all of our great times and good friend- ship; To Jim — a get-out-of-jail-free card; to Ray — all those times at Wheaton and everlasting friendship; To Goldie — my 944 and my pennies and friendship; To Pete — Joan; To Steve — a mule; To Christa — dealership of 357 mags; To the brothers — mega-friendship David Andrews: To Steve — I leave anything he can steal; To Jason — some whipper snappers and my home lessons; To Jim — some normal clothes; To Ed — the front seat; To Chris — my grades; To Bill — a complete game for Antic; To Anyone — my teachers Dina Andrews: To Eric — all my love and our good times remembered; To Dina K. — the best of times; To my family — thanks for putting up with me through thick and thin; To Renee M. — an everlasting ride to work; To Norton High — pain and misery year after year; To my kitty Charlie — homework to eat Richard Astacio: I wish you guys would get jobs, but I do leave you a quarter to play the pede; To Renee — I leave a bone Janene Banks: To Lorrin — John Bon Jovi, a Harley and my everlasting friendship; To Carol — a long-haired boyfriend; To Jeff — a twelve stringed accoustic; To Shawn — all Clyde ' s children; To Diane B. — a broken overhead; To Lauri — more of the Captain; To Yvonne — a Camaro with leopard striped louvers; To Donna — white nylons; To the Motleys — a bottomless keg and thanks Mom Dave Barac: Denise — our memories and friendship always; Toby — thanks for being my best friend; Larry — a matching car door; Mark — You were fantastic ; Donnie — the word dude ; Al — thanks for the tips; Mom and Dad — thanks; Paul and John: — strong friendship after fights; all my other great friends — Tom, Eric, Pete, Leah, Donna, Shana — memories and best of luck in the future Diane Lee Bartley: To Mom and Dad — thanks and 1 love you; To Kim — a lifetime contract with Saga and many more escape vaca- tions; To Gretch — The coolest pumpkin stealer — a night out with the Boston Bruins; To Sheri — a briefcase in the snow and a new driveway; To the sixth period gym crew — our exceptional skills, coordination, and great times John Belkner: Kari — our great times together, past and future, all my love and affection, and my car; Toby — a mind that thinks; Dave — the friendship we almost lost; Eric — a collapsable pool stick for when you turn pro; Al — the Chancey ' s Nova; Tom — a passing touchdown; Paul — Kleenex; Peter D. — a tent; Barry, Pete, Brian, Skit, Jonathan, Mark — our great memories Kim Benson: To Di — teabags, one-way ticket to Colorado, cellulose fibers and many thanks; To Gretch — a security system, friend- ship and memories forever, To Deb — the coolest dude ; To Kari — a real car and all our memories; To Grika — a joke book for making me laugh; To Eric — special friendship forever; To the Gang — best of luck, friendship, and memories at N.H.S. Reunions can be so depressing if one allows them to be. I, however, am rather excited about seeing the graduation class of 1987 ten years after having guided them through their final year as one of their advisors. I hope this affair will be held somewhere besides the school cafeteria; after all, there are just so many events one can hold tastefully in a cafeteria! The Arrival: The Boston Marriot, a far cry from a cafeteria indeed! This can ' t possibly be the right address; not with so many beautiful sports cars in front of such an elegant place . . . and so expensive! Their class fund raisers could never have afforded this! Corvettes, Limousines, Porsches, and unbelievably, a Pink Lamborghini!? Oh wait . . . yes, this must be the place — I see Aaron Coolidge ' s Datsun near the back of the lot. I suppose I should go in now, if for no other reason than to find out who would own a pink Lamborghini! The Greetings: So many familiar faces ... I am pleased to see such a large turnout after so many years. There ' s Class President Kim Benson, who organized this reunion. She looks exhausted, probably working too hard in her Retail Management position in New York. She ' s speaking with her old friend Diane Bartley, whom I hear is living with her own family in the area. She is apparently very happy working with disabled children at Mass General. Another Boston resident is Maureen Malloy, whose article I read in the sports section of the Globe not too long ago. Surprisingly, Maureen is not wearing her usual Celtics T-Shirt. I spoke to Tammie Girelli who is still living in MA with her family. She is a Psychometrist at the same hospital where Diane Smedburg works as a nurse. What a great staff this hospital must have! I ran into Karen O ' Connell, whose illustrations have become very popular in the Boston area. She had just returned from a jaunt to Europe, where she bumped into Louie Dion. Lou is stationed in Germany with the Navy, living with his wife and children. Apparently Louie ' s liberal, Canadian bride has changed his life; she introduced him to new ideas, new politics, and (most impor- tant) the members of Rush. I asked Karen about Debbie Brown, who now lives in New Jersey with her family. Deb, so I am told, has a thriving practice in child psychology, both in the office and in her own home. Karen also mentioned Cheryl Carter, from whom she has heard very little since Cheryl moved to England. The last time Karen heard from her, Cheryl had just come back from an assignment in the Middle East for National Geographic. Cheryl had recently won a Pulitzer for her photographs in that magazine, an honor which brought her to New York, where she stayed with Merrideth Chartier. Mer- rideth has also been doing a bit of traveling — with an off- Broadway production. Her husband was not pleased with her absence. He was forced to care for her two children, her dance studio, and Cheryl, while she was visiting. Another NYC resident is Jamie Prophet, who works as a musician and was recently featured in Guitar magazine ' s latest issue. Janene Banks is another musician. She took time out from her worldwide tour to be here tonight. Eric Pane took a vacation from his work as an oceanographer to fly in from San Diego with his family. He cannot always be busy when one con- siders the enviable tan he has been flaunting. Speaking of tans, there ' s Joey Marino, another Califor- nian. Joey is very proud to have become a computer programmer and to have finally learned how to spell! When he ' s not working he gets his tan playing baseball with his kids and his little dog. Dina An- drews also lives out West, where she owns a chain of hotels around Las Vegas and Reno. Speaking of hotels, I think I see this hotel ' s manager entering the room. I hope nothing ' s wrong . . . hey, that ' s Lisa Burke! She manages the Marriott? No wonder the class could afford this hotel. She ' s talking to Melissa George, who is an airline attendant on a private airline owned by John Treeful: The Party- Line. What an interesting concept: private jets for wealthy people to hold flying parties. John has mastered Spanish and lives in Arizona now — no need for Ultratan in that state! 66 The Conversations: I was talking to Alka Popat who is now a very wealthy pediatrician in England and married with 2 children and a huge mansion. She mentioned the latest about her old school buddies. Would you believe that Shannon Tuttle is a millionaire secluded on her own island Paradise? She and her hus- band travel to keep themselves busy, although I can ' t understand why anyone would want to leave Paradise. Kelly O ' Shea is a sports medicine specialist for the Boston Red Sox. She and her family often travel to her Australian husband ' s homeland, where they hobnob with the kangaroos. Erin O ' Shea is an accountant in Vermont. After Erin passes the CPA test, she and her family are going to Ireland. I guess Ireland and Australia are about as far apart as the twins could get; I ' m sure it was an unintentional separation, of course. Everyone knows about Priscilla Mansfield. After she played the starring role opposite Michael J. Fox in his latest movie and went on to win the tournament at Wimbledon last year, she and her family haven ' t had a minute ' s rest from Priscilla ' s fans, who plague them constantly at her Florida home. Kris Rodrigues is another famous member of our class. A millionaire living in Hollywood, she is married and has two children. Her Levi ' s 501 Blue Jeans com- mercial was the start of a fantastic career for her. Kris said she heard from Heather McQuade who is living in Massachusetts. She owns a huge house with her husband and children. I wonder who does the housework? Probably someone who looks like Lurch, from Heather ' s old favorite TV show, The Addams Family. I ' ve just had a chat wit h Jana Allen at the punch bowl. Jana, a very successful computer systems analyst, owns a chain of stores specializing in computers. Wouldn ' t Mr. Kelley flip if he could see her now! Jan is married with three children. Jennifer Smith, as in the old days, was not far behind Jana. Jen, a math teacher, owns a ski resort where she, her hus- band and their four children spend the winter weekends on the slopes. I wonder if Jen spends her days calculating the odds of one of her kids, who are all expert skiers, tumbling down the mountain. Did you know that Jayne Moreau is an elementary teacher in France? C ' est vrai! Jayne has set out to travel the untraveled path. I have found that Lisa Delatore is now basking in the California sun with her husband. What a life! Erin Smith is a hygienist in New York where keeps cavity-free mouths in all her childr en. Linda Roe has passed the CPA test and enjoys her success at home in NYC. Debra Clark is a nurse at a nearby hospital, where all her male patients delay their recoveries in order to see her pretty smile a little longer. Debbie Aftosmes is a specialist in early childhood education, and after having two children of her own, she should be! We all gathered around Michelle Laramee as she told us about her most recent space flight. Michelle looked great, even without her space suit. Lora Zom- mer stunned the crowd. Lora was always a ham, and she has proved to be a talented performer while holding a degree in engineering. Lora left her NYC penthouse on a break from performing Mama Rose in Gypsy to be with us here today, dancing up a storm. And here comes Gerry Lynch, who is still available and quite rich. His rock star status has girls following him all over the earth, which is the only address he could give me because he can ' t narrow it down to one place! Gerry tells me that Sam Turnage just zoomed back from the Indy 500. Sam is married with two children and is happy working as a drag racing automotive expert. I overheard Brad Dowdall boasting of his booming ar- chitectural firm in Dallas, Texas. Brad has already set up enormous trust funds for his children and has acquired a southern accent — Hahvard Yahd is gone from his vocabulary forever. Kim Mac- Donald was chatting about her job as a merchandising buyer for Neiman-Marcus, where she bought the stunning outfit she wore to the reunion. Kim also lives in a penthouse with her husband and single child. Jen Scott, now a psychiatrist in Florida is married with two children. I heard Rose- Marie Peck is also living in Florida. She owns a beautiful house because of her success in the real estate business. With Rose-Marie to sell you some good property and Jen to keep you sane, Florida could be almost bearable in the sweltering summer months. Some of the alumni still reside in Norton. Paul Gonsalves owns a computer business and is a self-made millionaire. Sean Green, another rich member of the Class of 1987, is an accountant. Fred Ekstrand also resides in Norton. He is a com- puter programmer and it is rumored that he got his start working for Paul ' s business. Norman Kinglsey is an aircraft mechanic for American Airlines, but he may be working for John Treeful ' s Party-Line soon, so John ' s planes will be in tip-top shape for every big bash. 6 The Gossip: As I ' ve been walking around I inadvertently overheard some conversations among other alumni who still live in or near Norton. From what I hear, I may have a chance to guide second-generation students from these graduates. Danielle Ricci, for example, is a business administrator in Norton, who has several children, as does Kristin Celeste. Kristin is an investments consultant in town. Their services are in great demand in Norton, since it is no longer the dull little town it used to be — now high school kids don ' t have to leave town to have fun! William Shaul is a painter in Norton who, I hear, is learning to fly. Holli Fitgerald is a nurse in Attleboro, where she lives with her husband. She was talking to Robin Wallace, who is a Harvard Medical student living in Cambridge. They were discuss- ing Robin ' s ambition to become Chief of Surgery at Mass. General Hospital. I must remember to avoid having surgery there in the future — just a joke! Another medical student is Karen Bryant, a promising esthetician, who was talking to Maryann Watson, a registered nurse in Seekonk, about Karen ' s skin care center. I overheard Theresa Grieve discussing her work in the computer field with Beth McLeod, an accountant studying to become a CPA, and Jim Souza, an accountant on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Theresa was trying to sell a computer system which would make ac- counting more simple. The two accountants, however, were understandably reluctant to accept a machine which might eventually replace them in their jobs. Then there ' s Edward Gonsalves from whom no one has heard since his wedding shortly after graduation. He is probably the wisest of the graduates for avoiding this reunion. I overheard Lisa Poole, a top journalist for a Mississippi newspaper, talking to Cindy King, a computer science expert that has become an executive in New York, about Cindy ' s latest trip abroad. Cindy, being the Jet-setter that she is, recently ran into Gail Murray at a ticket agency in Florida where Gail works. She told Cindy about their many friends who are working with children. Leah Socorro, for example, is a nursery school teacher. Somehow, I just can ' t picture sophisticated Leah playing ring-around-the-rosie. I guess anything ' s possible! Christa Briggs is a pre-school teacher living with her husband in Yarmouth. David Barac also works with children, as well as keeping his own tribe of kids in line at their home in the Tropics. Kim Robbins is the Nautilus queen of Hawaii at her health club, where she remains a swinging single, hula-ing the nights away at all those luaus. I overheard Candy Mann talking about her hotel on the Cape to Donna Harding. Donna owns an office in California where she is an optometrist. Now Donna has an entire family with natural tans, blonde hair, straight white teeth and 20-20 vision. Would you believe that Kari Dawson and Gretchen Sayce, who were next door neighbors for years, finally caught up with each other? Kari is a fashion merchandising consultant in Boston where she keeps her family always impeccably dressed. Gretchen and her husband live in Montreal where she is the head of Public Relations in a major Canadian business firm. Who would believe that Kim Mclntrye would turn out to be a Boston disc jockey, hired to play at her own class reunion?! She is living in a loft in Boston and pays her sizeable rent by playing at proms or spinning discs at WBCN in Boston. Dawn Munier brought her daughter Crystal with her tonight. They live together in New England, where Dawn is an efficient nurse and Crystal is a beautiful middle-school student. Jonathan Goldman is a commercial artist in Hawaii who often goes to Kim R. ' s health club to photograph the young women working out. He claims that view to be the best one in Hawaii! Sandy May and her family live in Miami where Sandy works as a secretary. Here comes Paul Curtin, a Mass. State Trooper living on Cape Cod who is working toward becoming a black belt in karate. Paul has been in contact with many of his high school friends on the highways since he became an officer . . . unfortunately he was not always welcomed by them. Many students have become accountants, from what I hear. Scott Chancey is a successful accountant in New Hampshire, John Collins and Dawn Weatherby in Florida, and Peter Fernandes and Al Poreda in Arizona. John moonlights as a male model, Peter is a millionaire, and Al plans to retire before he hits forty. I ' ll bet one of them owns the pink Lamborghini!! The Farewells: Oh no, it ' s time to say good-bye again. I said that once ten years ago and now I have to say it again. So many of the class of ' 87 have become computer experts, accountants, hotel managers, nurses or doctors, and so many of them are incredibly rich! Who would have ever thought they could make so much money? I certainly didn ' t, not after the struggles I went through for fund-raisers. Things change, however, so we ' ll see what has happened by the time the twenty-year reunion rolls around ... I can ' t wait!! 68 i r Tinder- ClaS5Tnen Juniors Acker, William April, Richard Baptista, Dawn Bartlett, Paul Bassett, Roberta Berlo, Matt Bernard, Joseph Bianchini, Andrea Blithe, Deborah Bouchard-Hall, Derek Brazao, Steven Breech, Matthew Brouwer, Renee Brown, Jeffrey Buck, Dawna Burns, Kelly-Ann Burrill, Timothy Cahill, Thomas Cahill, Tracey Chaplin, Michael Cleary, Jeff Cochran, Tonia Cookson, Marlene Coote, Michael Correia, Anthony Cronin, Lynn Crum, Michael DeSilva, Meghan Deslaurier, Laurel Desrosiers, Lee Devin, John Donohue, William Driscoll, Catherine Ducharme, Bruce Dudley, Susan Dumont, Carl Dunn, Matthew Earl, Steven Eblmg, Tom Ehrlich, Karen Elliot, Dwayne Esperian, Craig Espenan, Deborah Everson, Dawn Farrell, James Fisher, William Flannery, Nico Fortes, Anthony 70 Juniors Fortune, Christine Foster, Kevin Fraizer, Diane Francis, Joseph Franco, James Gaddy, Chris George. The students comprised the cast and had no written script to work from, only their feelings about the situations they faced in the play. Community response to the event was encouraging, though overwhelming. People were turned away from the nighttime performance, and performances had to be scheduled for the Mid- dle School students. The play was about the life and death of Edward LaRiviere, a teenager whose involvement with drugs and alcohol even- tually ended his life. His older brother Kevin recreated the events leading to Ed- die ' s involvement with drugs and his early death so that others might learn from his experiences. Kevin gave a short, moving, lecture after the final scene of the play which was just as effective in forcing peo- ple to think about the play ' s message. We thank Mr. LaRiviere for baring his soul to us so that we may be spared the grief he has felt. 84 Spaghetti Supper The Annual Spaghetti Supper put on by the senior class proved to be a big success. With the leadership and direction of our class advisors, the students prepared a delicious Italian meal. The contributions of the students and local businesses made it a profitable event. As a mat- ter of fact, they had so many desserts that they were compelled to give them away! All in all, the seniors thoroughly enjoyed themselves — which may be the first time this has ever happened during a fund-raiser. Homecoming this year was played against Blue Hills, whom we beat 8-6. There was a rousing pep rally and dance the night before the big game — sort of a pre-victory party. Dur- ing half-time, Peter Smith announced the names of the Homecoming Court as the band played the traditional grandiose Mr. Wheeler crowned Kari Dawson as this year ' s Queen and handed roses to her court, which included seniors Cindy King, Gail Murray, Michelle Hutcheon and Can- dy Mann; Juniors Sharon Mandosa and Dawn Everson; Sophomores Alison Cotton and Andrea Myers; and Freshmen Michelle Howell and Denise Lombardo. P p C S Christmas Concert The annual Christmas Con- cert, featuring the Norton High School Band an d Chorus, was held this year on December 22. The Band entertained the audience with the lilting notes of selections from Tchaikowsky ' s Nutcracker Suite and some French carols in the Noel Suite. The Chorus trilled through tradi- tional carols and newer holi- day songs, raising their voices in angelic harmony. The au- dience joined in at the end for some old-time favorites, joyful in the knowledge that vacation was just around the corner. i ii Semi-Formal The third Annual Semi-Formal, spon- sored by the National Honor Society, was again held at Wheaton College. Everyone sparkled in an evening of dinner and dancing. The fun included the election of the 1987 White Rose Princess, lovely Leah Socorro, and her Court of handsome attendants: David Barac, Tim Burrill, John Collins, Gerard Lynch, Al Poreda, and Mike Tierney. 89 2 Prom On May 9, 1986, Norton High School held its Junior-Senior Prom at Johnson and Wales Inn in Seekonk. We will Always and Forever remember dancing to Starlite in a spectacular set- ting of silver and lavender. The highlight of the evening was the crown- ing of the queen, Stacey Cotton. Her senior court included Christin Foster, Elizabeth Breault, Mary Lombardo and Beth Wagner. The junior court con- sisted of Martha Kennelly, Leah Socorro, Diane Bartley and Kelly Webb. 90 Always and Forever % 91 Applause MA Government Day Aimee and Derek were chosen as delegates to act as senator, represent- ative, or other government officer in the State House for a day in April. For that one d ay, they would be, in effect, running MA government along with many other students from Massachusetts. They at- tended seminars to prepare them for their one day in office, toured the State House, and received first-hand experience in the workings of our state government. Aimee Dudley and Derek Bouchard-Hall Jewish War Veteran ' s Award Nicole was chosen by her peers and teachers as Norton High School ' s entrant in the Jewish War Veteran ' s scholarship con- test. Her evident traits of character, scholar- ship, leadership and citizenship were the primary factors in her receiving the award. Nicole Maher Girls ' State Held at Bridgewater State College and sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Girls ' State Week was an eye-opener in all levels of U.S. government, as well as a chance for the girls to form new and lasting friendships. They got their first task of col- lege dorm life while receiving an education in running campaigns, ' parliamentary pro- cedure ' and the election process. Hugh O ' Brien Youth Leadership Conference Mark and Melanie were chosen on the basis of leadership positions in and out of school and their superior essays to attend the Leadership Conference. There they learned about good leadership characteristics and will share that knowledge with the sophomores of next year. Mark Wilson and Michelle Casagni D.A.R. Good Citizen Karen was elected to represent Norton High School in the Daughters of the American Revolution scholarship competi- tion. She had to display qualities of scholar- ship, leadership and citizenship to be award- ed this honor. Karen O ' Connell Boys ' State At Bentley Colleg e, the Norton delegates to Boys ' State Week participated in mock local, state, and federal government offices, planned campaign strategies, played sports, and befriended other Boys ' State delegates who had come to share their dorms for that week. The American Legion invited several guest speakers during the week to complete the boys ' education in U.S. government. National Honor Society The National Honor Society, directed by Mrs. Dolores Robbins, is made up of those students who have shown characteristics of leadership, scholarship, citizenship and service. This society works very hard to prepare a number of fun-filled activities for the school. Some of these include The College Day Fair and the White Rose Semi-Formal. The society also participates in a number of fundraisers such as the bikeathon, the selling of balloons and candy to raise money for two scholarships given to seniors who have shown academic excellence through their four years in high school. 96 National Art Honor Society The National Art Honor Society continued to spread their creativity throughout the school with ceiling tiles, bulletin boards and even a few murals. This year they sold hand-painted tote bags to raise money for an art scholarship. The artists went on many field trips with their advisor, Mrs. Gagnon, to the M.F.A., the Gardner Museum, and to N.Y.C. to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other famous N.Y.C. sights. This year the Art Honor Society also experimented with enameling, airbrushing, and critiquing artwork. front: (I to r) Karen O ' Con- nell (Pres.), Candy Pike ( T r e a s . ) , Cherie Pierce (sec), Barry Walsh (V.P.), Johnathan Goldman . back: Steven Lee, Erika Desilva, and Merrideth Chartier. This year ' s math team, guided by Mrs. Joan Vital, lost many key players from last year; however, that didn ' t affect an outstanding record of victories. This dedicated young group participates in two leagues: Southeastern Math League, which involves traveling to other schools, and the New England League, for which tests are given to students after school. There was great participation in this year ' s team. Mrs. Vital is proud of both leagues ' great achievements and rewarded them with a day trip to New York with the art department. After 2 out of 4 meets the Southeastern League is in second place, and the New England League in first place after 3 out of 6 tests. Weekly practice, dedication and hard work have their reward for this year ' s math team. Pep Club Newspaper Staff row 1: Lisa Poole, Mike McKinney, Jean Jerome, row 2: Miss Dziejma, Michael Vandeurse, Sangita Chandra, Dawn Williams, Paul Anderson, Karen Brown, Dawn DeCosta, Diane Bartely and Kim Benson. This year ' s Newspaper Staff, headed by Lisa Poole (editor) and Jean Jerome (asst.), made a number of changes in the school paper with the help of their new ad- visor, Miss Dziejma. The staff began by changing the paper ' s name to What ' s Up. They also changed the print and the setup giving it a more enjoyable and appealing outlook. They attempted to change the paper to actual newspaper but ran into too many difficulties. These students work very hard every month gathering stories, in- terviewing and working with word processors and computers. They spend many hours after school making decisions to improve the paper. They enjoy issuing the paper and hope their readers enjoy it too. By purchasing What ' s Up students help support and reward this innovative and dedicated staff. The paper can be pur- chased from any member or through Miss Dziejma. So keep up on Current Events and buy What ' s Up and know What ' s Up! 99 French Club The French Club is an organization coordinated by Mrs. Russell and the officers. This club is involved in designing and participating in a number of interesting French-related (of course!) activities. Some recent activities coordinated by Kristen Rodrigues (Pres.) and her helpers include a crepe party, the viewing of a French film with English subtitles, and various excur- sions to Harvard Square to sample the many French stores in Boston. The organization participates in many Spanish-oriented ac- tivities coordinated by Mrs. Sweeny. They were involved in a project with the National Art Honor Society to add some cultural zest to the Spanish room, and as a native celebration of Christmas, they made Pinatas. The Norton Lancer Marching Band played through another smashing season, aided by ten 8th graders who agreed to fill out the music section of the band. This year ' s half- time show delighted us with Razzle Dazzle, the theme from Miami Vice, Tequila, and Head over Heels. The Auxiliaries ' perfor- mances showed some noticeable variety and in- novation, thanks to their new advisor, Liz Medeiros and Majorettes: (I to r) Jana Allen, Lydia Silva, Dawn Weatherby, Chris Chisholm, Renee Brouwer, Danielle Ricci (capt.), Melissa George, Theresa Ridlon, Jennifer Smith, Tracey St. Pierre. Led by new drum ma- jors Melanie Brown and Mark Wilson, our band traveled to UMass at Amherst, where they performed in the half- time show with other high school bands and a UMass group as a part of Band Day. At the Taun- ton Christmas Parade, Norton took third place in the Music Category, for their rendition of Let it Snow. Cheers to Mr. Mac and his musicians for yet another entertain- ing fall season. Rodriguez Football Through the dedicated and high spirited coaching of Mr. Larogue and his assistants, the Norton Lancers continued to earn respect through a winning 6-2-1 league record Though the Lancer football team lost some 20 members from last year ' s Superbowl team, it came back looking strong and full of poten- tial. Co-captains Jim Sicard and Joe Marino kept the team deter- mined to outdo themselves every game, showing that last year ' s championship team was no acci- dent. With only seven members of the team being seniors, Norton is again looking forward to another season filled with victory in 87 ' . Cross Country It wasn ' t easy tor Coach Rukstalis and his team, but Norton High School ' s Cross Country members stayed strong and showed true Lancer spirit this year Plagued with in- juries, the team found itself fac- ed with uncomfortable disad- vantages against the opposi- tion. But the Never say die ' ' runners struggled and spurred themselves on in every race, showing other teams just what the Lancers are all about. The senior co-captains were Eric Larson and Brian Clark. A team ' s record does not always reflect the ac- complishments of the team or the individual honors that may have been achieved. This was the case with the Lancer Volleyball Team this year. The team had a good season with eight wins and seven losses; but, they have acquired the skill needed to play advanced offensive allignments. From an individual point of view the team Tri-captains, senior Michelle Laramee and juniors Dayle Mann and Kathy Kmetz, were chosen as League All-stars. These three players were also chosen for the first ever Attleboro Sun Chronicle All-Star Team. The seniors this year were Tri-captain Michele Laramee, Alicia Simmons and Erin O ' Shea and their representation of the class of 1987 was outstanding. Volleyball, representing the best in women ' s athletics and in team competition, is doing its part in the Norton High School In- terscholastic Athletic Program. 112 Field Hockey Under the coaching of alumna Elizabeth Shaw, the 1986 field hockey team competed with vigor. While Leah Soccorro and Martha Kennelly led the team ' s offense, Regina Courchme and the M? flower League ' s finest goalie, Knsten McMorrow, were the mainstays of the defense Seniors Candice Mann, Nicole Maher, Donna Harding, Michelle Hutcheon, and Michelle Lavoie contributed to the fine effort of the team. Norton had a 7-2 record in the league and was 13-6 overall. The team had victories over non-league opponents Franklin, Bourne and Apponequet. The Lancers qualified for the State Tourna- ment for the second year in a row but went down to defeat at the hands of Stoughton. The team ' s strength was doubles. Three of the regular doubles players were named to Mayflower All-Stars: Robert Bouchard-Hall, Car- min ladonisi, and Tom Fitzgerald. Kyle Texeira was chosen in singles. The 1987 season should be the one that brings to maturity the talents of Jon Goldman (at 1st singles), Mark LaPierre (at 2nd singles), Paul Macken and Dave Barac (at 1st doubles.) Macken hopes to regain the form that gained him recognition in the 1985 Mayflower All-Stars.
