NW's Gridders Achieve Finesf Season The 1973 Wildcat Varsity football squad not only competed but also demolished all opposition on the way to the school's first undefeated season and the M.S.A. A-conference crown. The fact that this was Northwestern's first season in the M.S.A. A-conference led many to wonder whether last season's B-con- ference champs and the number one team in the Sun Paper's Poll could compete against such powerhouses as Loyola, Calvert Hall, and Poly. Coach Jim Weisch's championship team consisted of an explosive offense led by the passing of quarter- back Wayne Carrington, break-away runners Renell Harrison, and Kevin Francis, and the always dangerous receiver Leroy Felder. Defense, however, was Northwest- ern's claim to fame. The undefeated squad led by an All-M.S.A. trio of defensive tackle Wheeler Brown, linebacker Emmanuel Massey, and defensive back Leroy Felder, plus two fine outside linebackers, Ham- mond Briscoe and Michael Briggs, bent but never broke. The 'Cats shut out two most dangerous rivals, num- ber two Poly and number three Cal- vert Hall, as the champions limited their opponents to a meager 8 points a game. Coach Welsch in his finest hour after the championship victory over Poly spoke his praise of his squad, Those kids are just great. They wanted this since August and have stopped at nothing to get it. They deserve all the praise in the world. Coaches Welsch and Barnes contemplate team from sidelines. Top left: Coach Welsch gives final instructions as Wildcats prepare for a big game.
