' 'fi ' ki k . . k ' ' k . k Tennis Team Troubled by Foes The 1973 Northwestern tennis team, lacking the essential elements that make for a winning season, was outplayed by both Patterson and consistently victorious Western. However, the squad took great pride in win- ning one match against Westerng no other school had been able to stop the girls' school's powerhouse. Players are: first-ranked Stacie Knable and Marlene Shugar- man, second ranked Sheila Hooker and Sharlene Shu- garman, third-ranked Angel Jackson and Linda White, fourth-ranked Hilda Francis and India Artis, and alter- nates Deborah Trehern and Linda Hameroff. Special commendation goes to Sheila Hooker and Sharlene Shugarman for their excellent court play with Sheila at net and Sharlene working the back court. They were the only unbeaten duo, defeating five other schools. Marlene Shugarman, voted outstanding senior mem- ber of the team, and Stacie Knable played in singles competition. Qplashers Form Squad K. Davis and D. Ervin do dashing dives. After having no girls' swim team for a year, in the fall of 1973 the Physical Education Department began building a team in which the school could take pride. The aqua-squad has made an excellent beginning at building the skill, the discipline and the determination needed to win. Northwestern splashers competed in two meets and finals. Even though the swimmers did not blaze any trails of success, they held their own against formidable foes. The free style swimmers were Jackie Robinson, Dawnza Ervin, Renay Alexander, Dawn Pope, Karen Paul, Alison Peebles, Donna Richardson, and Kim Davis. The back crawl swimmers were Liselle Smothers and Donna Richardson and the breast stroke was dominated by Kim Davis. Coach V. Schaefer stated, The new girls combined with a hard working core of experienced girls will be in the running next year. However, next year we will be winning. L. Smothers back crawls to fin- ish. J.
