Your teachers have attempted to help you through these past years, guided by a philosophy that can best be described in the words of Daniel Webster: If we work upon mar- ble, it will perish, if on brass, time will efface it, if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust, but if we work upon the immortal minds, and inbue them with principles, with the just fear of God and love of our fellow-man, we engrave on those tablets something that will brighten to all eternity. I congratulate all members of the Class of '74 on the completion of your program of studies and wish you success and happiness in the years ahead. Rejuvenated after years of inactiv- ity, the Northwestern chapter of the National Honor Society has Sparcked to life under the guiding hand of advisors Alan Sparck and assistant principal John Waters. Striving to make the Honor Society more than just a name, the 90 mem- bers who are academically in the top five percent of the school, serve Northwestern and must meet qualifi- cations of character, leadership and scholarship for induction. Anofher Winning Season for lf's Academic Practice makes perfect Every year under the iron hand of advisor Charles Reinhardt, Jr., the It's Academic team braves the wilds of television to battle opposing teams of academics. This season, as in the past, gave Reinhardt's Repro- bates victory and brought fame to Steve Bryzman, Howard Feldstein, Ross Loeb, and Leonard Frankford, team alternate. After two games, the brainy bunch suffered defeat by Parkville in a hard fought third game. The spoils of victory included over 351,000 in scholarship money and a set of encyclopedia which were gen- erously donated to the library of Fallstaff Middle School. Well, there goes that game. The oerebal celebrities Journalism Class Creafes Things The Things Crew Working hard? Lecture time again! Ll ..lL...liJ. In the spring of 1973 Northwesterrfs newspaper, The Compass breathed its final feeble inspiration. The literary magazine, Phoenix, had already expired and remained unmourned. Thus, Northwestern may have been the only school in the city with no newspa- per communication for its students. THINGS about Northwestern grew from the void. Journalism I students Carla Bailey, Carol Boston, Valeria McCants, Steve Peregoff, and Rodney Law- son attempted the improbable: the production of a newspaper with no money, no printer, and no after- school staff. With the creative help of typists extraor- dinaire Deborah Merenbloom and Joyce Brooks, and printing pro Melvin Odakowski, the Northwestern free press was born. The newsletter assumed the responsibility for disseminating tidings of events and for voicing editorial comments and protest. A modest beginning, the mini-paper teaches students to impro- vise, to economize, and to persist in the face of multi- plying problems. NW Clubs Reach Ouf And Touch Students who are interested in careers in merchandising, marketing, or management are now able to use leisure time to learn about their own fields. Speakers and field trips arranged by the Future Business Leaders of America help young peo- ple to gain practical insights. The International Club is commit- ted to the idea that knowledge breeds understanding and peace. This extra- curricular group endeavors to pro- mote worldliness and neighborliness through learning experiences. -4-all F.B.L.A. - Back row: T. Smith, K. Wilson, J. Jones, D. Strong, T. Sinclair, A. A-conference crown. The fact that this was Northwestern's first season in the M.S.A. A-conference led many to wonder whether last season's B-con- ference champs and the number one team in the Sun Paper's Poll could compete against such powerhouses as Loyola, Calvert Hall, and Poly. Coach Jim Weisch's championship team consisted of an explosive offense led by the passing of quarter- back Wayne Carrington, break-away runners Renell Harrison, and Kevin Francis, and the always dangerous receiver Leroy Felder. Defense, however, was Northwest- ern's claim to fame. The undefeated squad led by an All-M.S.A. trio of defensive tackle Wheeler Brown, linebacker Emmanuel Massey, and defensive back Leroy Felder, plus two fine outside linebackers, Ham- mond Briscoe and Michael Briggs, bent but never broke. The 'Cats shut out two most dangerous rivals, num- ber two Poly and number three Cal- vert Hall, as the champions limited their opponents to a meager 8 points a game. Coach Welsch in his finest hour after the championship victory over Poly spoke his praise of his squad, Those kids are just great. They wanted this since August and have stopped at nothing to get it. Despite all the unlucky influences surrounding the occasion, juniors managed to enjoy a romantic evening of entertainment with the band, Natural Gas. The turn-out was large, however, many revellers were watching and waiting to see when the evil omen of the thirteenth Friday would be realized. Wear- ing pastel colors, seniors marched from the gym to the auditorium where representatives from South- western and Lake Clifton High Schools were observing the procedure to get ideas for the activities of their first graduating senior class. Offi- cers, advisors, and class members were sworn in with candles and pledges as the senior chorus enter- tained everyone with the class song, Day by Day, and Standing Together written by Director Bill Cummings and Sharon Dickerson. After the rather concise ceremony everyone moved into the hallway and to the courtyard where cameras cap- tured the beautiful day. if of .,,,,, it Director Bill Cummings accompanies the senior chorus. Despite the fact that there were few spectators, the play was produced on the nights of May 10th and 11th. Rainy Senior Picnic Neither inclement weather nor added costs stopped many seniors from participating in the senior picnic which was held at Patapsco State Park on May 29, 1974. As usual the favorite pastimes were hiking and mountain climbing, but this year the ability to perform daring stunts on the seesaws and swings was an important factor in the senior romp. Naturally after such strenuous activity everyone was ravenous for lunch. Even though conditions weren't ideal, sen- iors splashed around in the mud and made the best of what turned out eventually to be a lovely day. Tearful Farewell l On May 31, 1974 seniors marched into the auditorium beneath wreaths of flowers to greet advisors, fellow students, and guests, and to bid fare- well to Northwestern. Brenda Petti- grew functioned as mistress of cere- monies, and the senior Chorus pro- vided the entertainment. Guest speaker Hildagardeis Boswell offered words to the wise as Michael Johnson reassured doubting parents. Faculty and administrators assisted in the presentation of awards, and class advisors through tears of sadness spoke to the class for the last time. When the program ended many stu- dents left with mixed emotions and their pink and blue flowers as remembrances. 198 xii fi x.. by ppp .I . , ' l L .
