Social studies courses are taught to make students aware of the
past to prepare them for the future. The Social Studies
Department added the new class, Employment Ability Skills, to
its' curriculum and is taught by Mr. George Nassif. The class
deals with preparing Northwestern students for the future by
helping them to center their interest around job choices. Its' main
objective is to help the students choose a career that they were
interested in and teach skills required in that particular career.
For instance, if being a. secretary was a chosen profession, classes
in typing and business would be a necessity. The class emphasizes
good grooming habits. the do's and don'ts of a job interview, work
in career labs that orientate students to different careers and
listening to guest speakers discuss various careers. Students had
to maintain a "c" or above average to participate in this class.
Two new teachers as well as three counselors were added to
the department. They are as follows: Mr. Ryan, Mr. Nagy, Mrs.
Ratner, Mrs. Artis and Mr. Cowsert. Course offerings included
Economics, American Presidents and History. In order to make
class activities more enjoyable, the students participated in class
discussions on issues of importance, went on field trips, did much
book work and enjoyed the use of audio-visual materials as a
learning tool in the classroom. Mr. Frank Mishina is department
head. No matter what type of Social Studies a student chooses to
take, it will provide him with an indepth look at himself and his
