Before graduation, all students will have had some form of math, whether it be general math. basic math, or college preparatory math. Ms. Judy Lewis, math chairperson, welcomed three new math instructors to the department. They are Mrs. Gloria Colen, Mr. John Kohlkepp and Mrs. Virginia Ricky. Mrs. Coughlin, Miss Pauline, Mrs. Colen and Mr. Kohlkepp jointly wrote the text for the math course, "Math Applications", which was used in our math classes this year. To better serve our students, some of our teachers attended the Genesee Area Council of Math Teachers' Workshop to brush up on new math techniques. Approximately twenty Northwestern students attended the Math Specialty Program at Northern High School to take Advanced Functions. This year. the Math Field Day was held in March in which five Northwestern students competed against twenty teams throughout the county. In order to stimulate more interest in math, a math club has been formed here at Northwestern. 9

Since an understanding of Science is essential in today's world, various courses were offered at Northwestern which allowed the students to acquire a broad background in this field. The courses ranged from General Biology to Chemistry and Physics, Environmental Study, Small Animals and House Plants. All of the courses were geared toward giving the student a better understanding of himself and his world. The science program involved everything from recording changes in the weather to the dissecting of cats and frogs. Field trips were planned to give the students a chance to see science in practice. During the summer of 1977, preparations were made for the addition of eleven new medical care courses to the science curriculum. Since students and counselors were not familiar with these offerings before school opened, only four of the eleven new courses had enrollments large enough to continue this year. Each course was taught with special emphasis on the relationship between course content and the broad medical field. After completing all required work in the medical laboratory, qualified students could become certified laboratory aides giving each a good foundation for any medical care profession. Because of the many vocational opportunities offered in the medical care profession and as our students and parents become more aware of the excellence of the program, we anticipate a full schedule here at Northwestern next fall. 4 ' E V f 'MA 1 . .. ,iw , ,, , ff ' ,,.y , ' S gm: i SR .TW ,.,,, , , .
