Co-chairman Karla Sietstra and Dale Vander Broek worked hard with several committees to plan a full weekend of events. Saturday began with a parade down town featuring local bands and floats. At the same time the NW soccer team was meeting USD-Vermillion and the cross-country team was preparing for their run with Sioux Falls College. In the afternoon, the Red Raider football team took on Sioux Falls College and came out with a 34-7 victory to add to the festivities. The movie, "High Plains Drifter," the play "Tartuffe," and a dance featuring "Shatter" were held at night. Sunday morning the weekend was drawn to a close with a worship service led by an alumni group called "Friends of the Friend." F QEEQRQ fw,s. rx . F .if .ig if .4 ga sg efiiril-at-..aeNPM K frr. At Thursday night's coronation Beth Paekel was chosen as queen from a court including Anita Bomgaars, Carla Hettinga Marilyn Tjeerdsma and Janet Christiansen. The Stegenga Festival followed with the Freshmen girls taking the honors. Friday's schedule included the Rowenhorst relays and "Honey- tree" performed in the chapel at night. The beautiful weather on Saturday allowed NW students to have their first outdoor picnic in 3 years, see an exciting tennis match and baseball game and take part in the annual Granberg Regatta and rope pull at the Floyd River. Continuing in the festivities, Julie Starkenburg and Larryl Humme emceed the banquet at night. A faculty recital given by Kim Utke and Katherine Henjum followed. The weekend concluded with "Clear" providing music for the dance. 1 I JV l ly. The day so many students look forward to throughout their college career. That day of greeting old friends, of saying good-bye tolpresent ones. Of smiles, of tears. Of closing one chapter of life, and of opening a new one. On May 9b "that day" became a reality for NW's seniors. As the speakers, Rev. Robert Wallinga, Sue Den Herder, Mel Wallinga, and Dr. Ed Ericson said, it marks the end of 4 years of dedicated study and of many lasting memories. lt begins the future. Without pausing, the pep bands began practicing for home basketball games and the concert band for its an- nual winter concert on January 31. At the same time many of these same stu- dents were working on stage band and brass choir music for other special performances. The band finished their regular concert season by touring Iowa and Wisconsin from March 29-April 2. The 25 Choral Readers, under the direction of Keith Allen, assistant professor of speech and drama at NW, traveled to churches and high schools in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin while on their ten-day trip. In their program the Readers dealt with two themes: the Old Testament theme of God's interaction with his people and the New Testament theme of the meaning of Christ's ministry. This was done through interpretive selections from various Bible passages and contemporary authors and music. President Speaks of Church and Education H. V. Rowenhorst, President of Northwestern College, and wife Shirley. While Northwestern College has a liberal admissions policy and offers remedial work for students weak in certain areas, while we recognize that most of our students are not going to spend their lives primarily in scholarly pursuits, and while we offer vocational training and are concerned about the whole man, we are first and foremost an institution of higher learning, a firm step above high school. Northwestern offers young people the challenge of excellence, of going beyond the commonplace, of diving beneath the surface, of getting to the root of the matter. Much of our most important work will not be immediately visible to the casual observer - or sometimes even to ourselves - because we often deal in intangible, qualitative matters such as ideas, values, attitudes, and perspectives, which are not readily measurable. Thus, even though Northwestern is many things to many people, our focus must be sufficiently clear so as to allow us to do our primary task well. As ,,ff a Christian college, we have a special calling which no other institution, Christian or not, not, can accomplish. We are serious about this vocation. Although there is ample room for leisure activities and genuine recreation on our campus, we believe that it would be unfair to our students and disobedient to our Lord to expect anything less from them Cand those who teach themb than a total intellectual, moral, and spiritual effort. There is too much at stake. Our churches and our world are much in need of committed, thoroughly liberally educated, insightful, sensitive, creative, wise, Spirit-guided Christian laymen and laywomen Cnot to mention clergyy. Faithfulness to Jesus Christ demands the highest achievement possible on the part of faculty and students alike. "l press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
