DEDICATION Among the first of the college personnel with whom a new student makes acquaintance is Dr. Charles E. Koerble. Dean of Faculty. Dr. Koerble confers with each freshman and explains how understandings gained from his entrance test results will affect the student ' s college career and his course of study at NWMSC. All of this he does in a friendly, earnest way so that the student leaves the Dean ' s office knowing that if he ever needs the thoughtful advice of one wiser and more experienced than himself, he can turn to Dr. Koerble. Dr. Koerble joined the NWMSC administrative staff in 1954 in the capacity ' of Counselor of Students. Two years later he became Dean of Faculty. Finishing his third year in this new capacity, he has not only accepted the duties of Dean of Faculty, but he has continued to carry a number of the responsi- bilities connected with his counseling. Only a man with his vitality and love of working with people could take the responsibilities of both positions in his stride — but Dr. Charles E. Koerble does — and is a success in both. To this man the staff dedicates the 195Q TOWER.

President ' s Message I am impressed with the scope of the 1959 TOWER. My message to you follows the pattern of the Tower. MIND: Since wars begin in the minds of men. it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed. Constitution of UNESCO. These lines from the first Proverb of Solomon: To know wisdom and instruction: to perceive the words of understanding: To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and j udgment, and equity : To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning: and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: To understand a proverb, and the interpretation: the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. FELLOWMEN: The association of our fellowmen on this college campus is reflected in the no longer used second stanza of our Alma Mater: All the days we ' ve been together Fondly we recall : Days of fair and stormy weather. Thou hast gladdened all. MFMORAHl.Li MOMENTS: Now cumes the hour when we must say farewell And lei lamiliar things fall softly down Into the half -twilight where memories dwell With rich associations ... — Robert Flowers. A. B. 104 ' In the 19 59 TOWER some of these rich associations ' are pictured and should help you relive these memorable moments. PHYSICAL FEATS: Baron Pierre de Coubertin. who was the founder in 1894 of the modern Olympic games, made the following statement of the basic Olympic principles, The important thing in the Olympic games is not to win but to take part. The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well. To spread these precepts is to build up a stronger and more valiant and. above all. more scrupulous and more generous humanity. INNER LIFE: I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. —Psalm 121: 1, 2. The women of Residence Hall in their beautiful and signi- ficant Hanging of the Greens each Christmas put it this way, In olden times there was a legend that on Christmas Eve the little Christ Child came again to the earth, looking for homes in which He might be a guest. Those who would invite Him set a lighted candle in the window to show Him the way and to welcome His coming. In memory of this, we invoke thee. Spirit of Christmas, to place our lighted candles where they will shine to tell all who -come that this is the House of Friendliness and that He is our guest.
