Dear Bill, We went back to school in November with all navy men in the dorm, civilian men in the Quad and Miss Villar ' s Topper gone forever from our campus. We accentuated the opposite the first week of the term — leap week in leap year was extra special, concluded with a Sadie Hawkins ' dance. Such capers were followed immediately by our annual personal appraisal clinic. We circled left and formed a star through the courtesy of the Dance Club, who entertained at an all- school square dance, with fiddle and everything. The speech department won our approval with Wild Hobby Horses which they presented in assembly, November 22, before we enjoyed a short but thankful-for Thanksgiving vacation. Alpha Phi Omega initiated members, Varsity Villagers went formal for a Harvest Moon dance, and November was gone. Bienvenida Santos brought us greetings from the Philippines where our interests have been for some time. The Bearcats opened their basketball barrage against Rosecrans Field, December 13. Christmas parties were held as usual with special emphasis on giving and good will. Once more the lobby of Residence Hall was the scene of the traditional Hanging of the Greens. Our Christmas present to all the guys like you was an over subscription of our war bond quota, applying the heat to the Axis and ou r sales thermometer. The New Year found us knee deep in basketball games, studies, bookstore sessions, studies, Den dances and studies. The annual series of February lectures was inter- rupted by a coal shortage, but you can ' t stop our faculty. Snow and ice storms made the long walk more like an obstacle course than the scenic path you remember. The navy had the situation well in hand by February 10 when sailors and their best girls reported for duty at the second annual V-12 Ball. Local co-eds were strictly in awe of those queenly South Dakota girls. Both civilian and navy students took their best manners and went to a reception given by the faculty in the Residence Hall parlor, February 13. As the quarter ended we said goodbye to Coach Ryland Milner, who entered an army special service unit to conduct athletic clinics overseas. Maybe you ' ll be seeing him. Eight
