The Blizzard of ' 78 SilELXDI liSiiiiiiiiiiii - -. aS2 It was eight o ' clock Thursday morning, January 26, 1978. The halls of Northview — cold, silent, and tom- blike — were minus the noise and confusion of the first period rush. It was the Blizzard of ' 78, the worst snow- storm ever to hit Indiana. Where were you during the Blizzard of ' 78? Well, we know you weren ' t at Northview. Because of the blizzard, schools and businesses were closed down all over the state. The students of Washington Township received an unexpected four-day vacation. A nine o ' clock curfew for Indianapolis was ordered by Mayor William Hudnut III during the hazardous snow- storm. Only emergency vehicles were allowed on the roads during curfew hours. Additional snow, freezing temperatures, and striking coal miners all led to the energy crunch. Schools were required to cut back energy use 50%, so audio-visual equipment was not in use, lighting was reduced in halls and class- rooms, and temperatures were set at 65°. The second semester was scheduled to start on January 30, but because of the storm it did not start until February 2 . When temperatures soar this summer and you start to complain about the heat, just remember the BLIZZARD OF ' 78!
