ANET GUTI-IRIE ANCES I RACING ORLD Janet Guthrie, who last year became the first woman to compete in the NASCAR Grand National Race opened two more doors for women this year. On Memorial Day, she became the first woman to com- pete in the famous Indianapolis 500. Con- tinuing her advancement in a traditional- ly men's profession, she became the first woman to compete in the Grand National at Darlington International Raceway in South Carolina on Labor Day. A day earlier, engine problems kept Miss Guth- rie from attempting to qualify. Before tak- ing her two laps for times she had to take the rookie test, which consisted of driving a few laps at better than 130 miles per hour. After qualifying for the Grand Na- tional, Miss Guthrie was scheduled to run in the California 500 for Indianapolis- type cars at the Ontario Raceway. JIMMY M. SOLIS STEVE SOLIS JAN I.
