FIRST SPACE SHUTTLE TESTED FOR FUTURE The Spaceshuttle aboard its mother ship DERRICK G. ROSE LIZ ROTH BECKY RUIZ JIM D. SAINZ V 52 Seniors In 1977, America began testing its first space shuttle, the Enterprise, in pre- paration for future shuttle service. The Enterprise is the first of five shuttles to be built by the Space Division of Rock- well International in Downey. The 75 ton spaceplane, sitting on top of its mother ship, a modified Boeing 747 jet, was designed to return to earth at the end ofa space flight without either jet or rocket engines, saving energy and materials. The Enterprise has undergone several test flights and still has more to make. The first test on August 12th, 1977, was mostly to demonstrate its ability to glide safely to a landing. Each test was more rigorous than the one before. In the second test, the Enterprise was taken 24,000 feet above the Mojave Desert and guided through long banking, and steep diving turns, after taking off from the mother ship. In later tests, the landing of the spacecraft, after breaking through the earth's atmosphere, was guided by astronauts using the ship's speed and altitude during their descent to earth. Space engineers call this technique en- ergy management. The first shuttle Hight boosted by its own rocket engines and a brace of solid- propellant motors, is now set for 1979. ELLEN RowLAND TEDDY L. 0 thjfcseniorcg Rewarded Each year Girls' League sponsors an awards program in which they choose ten outstanding senior girls to honor as Girls of the Monthsf, From these ten girls, one is selected to be honored above all as the Girl of the Year. In September, all senior girls were reminded by student bulletins to turn in to the Career Center, applications stating all school and commun- ity activities they had participated in while attending Northview. Two Girls' League representatives from each class gathered monthly to review applications and choose a girl to be recognized for that particular month. At a rally held during the same month, this girl was announced and pre- sented with the traditional yellow rose and engraved silver bracelet. In the past, the representatives chose from the ten Girls of the Months, the girl they believed to be most deserving of the title of t'Girl of the Year.'l Searching for a fairer method, a point system was estab- lished, in which points were awarded for each activity tand totaled by ad- visors Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Lichty. Having the highest total points, Tammy Hagen was named 'KGirl of the Year . Starting at Northview in leadership as a freshman legislator, Tammy went on to become head J.V. cheer- leader, and a two year Varsity cheerleader. She was also a member of Thorians for two years, Girls' League, and president of C.S.F. in her junior year. Active in a surprising variety of activities, Patti Plummer was selected to be the first Girl of the Month in September. Patti played the leading female role in two drama productions at Northview, was a J.V. cheer- leader, a two year Songleader, and Girls, League president. The November girl, Carole McQuillan, concentrated her interests in leadership as a soph- omore legislator, A.S.B. Coordinator of Elections, and A.S.B. Secretary of Correspondence. Carole was also a Girls, League representative and a two year member of the Viking staff. Monica Nichols, interested in both sports and leadership, was named the December girl. At Northview, Monica played varsity tennis for four years, varsity and J.V. basketball, and varsity badminton. In class poli- tics she was vice-president of both her junior and senior class. January's girl, Cindy Aulwes, was a J.V. cheerleader in her sophomore year and a Varsity cheerleader as a senior. Cindy was also a junior class legislator, a Girls' League representative, and involved in the production of the year- book as a two-year member of the Viking staff. Working in leadership as a sophomore and junior class legislator, and pep as a Flagtwirler, Debi Clement was the February choice. Participating in athletics, Debi played varsity badminton for three years and J.V. vol- leyball in her junior year. A.S.B. Coordinator of Pep, Thorian vice-presi- dent, and Rally club president Jennifer Dorr was honored in the month of March. Jennifer was on the drill team in her freshman and sophomore years, and interested in baseball, a freshman, J.V. and varsity baseball statistician. Active in athletics, Barbara Wing, the April girl, played on the varsity volleyball team for three years, the varsity basketball team for three years, and the J.V. and varsity softball teams. Barbara also played in the band for three years, was Markliniants vice-president, and G.A.L.S. president in her senior year. Dedicating herself to interests within NorthvieW's Fine Arts department, Melanie Irvine, Mayls girl, served as Art Club treasurer in her junior year, vice-president her senior year, and was a member of the band for three years, serving as secretary all three years. Outside of the department, Melanie was active in Marklinians, and served as a junior class legislator. Holding the positions of A.S.B. Coordinator of Pep as a junior, and A.S.B. Treasurer as a senior, Roxane Moore was the girl selec- ted for June. During her four years at Northview, Roxane acted in one drama production, worked on the Viking staff for two years, and was a J.V. cheerleader as a sophomore. lr November-TAMMY HAGEN GIRL OF THE YEAR September-PATTI PLUMMER ,,,.....v' December-MONICA NICHOLS
