FIRST SPACE SHUTTLE TESTED FOR FUTURE The Spaceshuttle aboard its mother ship DERRICK G. ROSE LIZ ROTH BECKY RUIZ JIM D. SAINZ V 52 Seniors In 1977, America began testing its first space shuttle, the Enterprise, in pre- paration for future shuttle service. The Enterprise is the first of five shuttles to be built by the Space Division of Rock- well International in Downey. The 75 ton spaceplane, sitting on top of its mother ship, a modified Boeing 747 jet, was designed to return to earth at the end ofa space flight without either jet or rocket engines, saving energy and materials. The Enterprise has undergone several test flights and still has more to make. The first test on August 12th, 1977, was mostly to demonstrate its ability to glide safely to a landing. Each test was more rigorous than the one before. In the second test, the Enterprise was taken 24,000 feet above the Mojave Desert and guided through long banking, and steep diving turns, after taking off from the mother ship. In later tests, the landing of the spacecraft, after breaking through the earth's atmosphere, was guided by astronauts using the ship's speed and altitude during their descent to earth. Space engineers call this technique en- ergy management. The first shuttle Hight boosted by its own rocket engines and a brace of solid- propellant motors, is now set for 1979. ELLEN RowLAND TEDDY L.
