At 6:00 a.m., on May 26, 1977, New Yorkers gazed upward to a spot on the side of the World Trade Center tower in lower Manhattan. The spot was 27-year-old George Willig, a toy designer with a mountaineering background, who found that the building was very appealing, and that it was a per- sonal challenge. Willig made blocks to wear on his feet to help him climb up the vertical face of the 110 story tower. He was aided by scaffolding tracks used by the window-washers, and Iwo policemen whom he did not need, shown here on the plank to the right of Willig. By the time he completed the l,2l50 foot climb, it was 10:00 a.m., and a sizeable crowd had gathered helow, including several police officers. When he reached the roof, Willig was apprehended by the policemen, and was questioned and booked on criminal trespass, reckless endangerment, and dis- orderly conduct.
