Gunter learns of American humor as he laughs at a Gunter and a friend look on at a Northview football game classmate's joke. 'Wsit to CU CEn Iightens fidustriaq Qunter' 6Resigne1 24 Foreign Exchange Student Imagine that you're from a small mountainous coun- try in Europe where life is comfortable, quiet, and re- laxed. Now imagine a complete change in scenery and a totally different lifestyle in a heavily populated urban area near one of the largest cities in the United States. Life here is hectic, and everything seems big and crowd- ed. This imaginary situation is similar to the actual one that Gunter Resigner experienced when he left Austria to come live and attend school in Covina for a year. Gunter commented that the size of everything in this strange land frightened him at times. Even the cars were larger and more numerous than in Austria. Attending Northview was also quite a big change for Gunter. In Austrian schools, sports are considerably less important than they are in California. In fact, in Austria, sports are thought of in terms of very minor things. The educational system differs greatly. The first four years of schooling are the same for all students in Austria. At the age of ten, each student chooses either to go on to a school which offers a general education or to enroll in a school which teaches a profession. In Austria, Gunter lives with his parents, two sisters, and one brother. Upon return there, he plans to go on to a university to study psychology, philosophy, the arts, or a combination of two of these subjects. Gunter enjoys reading political, philosophical, and other types of literature such as poetry. He likes to draw, attend social gatherings and parties, and snow ski, which is his favorite sport. When Gunter first ar- rived, he looked forward to visiting Disneyland, Death Valley, and getting to know California. Gunter summed it up by saying, It was a very inter- esting experience. However, it was not always easy, and it took a lot of effort everyday to adjust to a new way of life and completely unfamiliar environment.
