GALS started the year with a new advisor, Ms. Caroline Jones, varsity tennis and varsity badminton coach. She and her officers, President Barbara Wing, Vice- President Pam Cartwright, Secretary Jenny Whipple, and Treasurer Cherlyn Ker- mode, planned fund raisers such as ajog-a-thon, a sucker sale, and a button sale to finance girls to go to special camps during the summer. For the first time GALS had jackets- they are black with gold lining and the girls' names are sewn on along with their varsity letter. Sweaters could also be purchased. GALS put on two awards banquets. The Fall banquet involved girls who played tennis and volley- ball. The Spring banquet involved those girls who participated in basketball, badminton and softball. 1 President Barbara Wing conducts meeting GHLS Sponsors Award Banquet V wr-, 1 7 s 3 FRONT ROWQ Chris Heinze, Lisa Braveman, Laurene Compomizzi, SECOND ROW l Watson, Cindy Cohen April Clerk, Barbara Wing, BACK ROWg Coach Jones, Karen F Lourel Otto, Jenny Haines, Cherlyn Kermde, Pam Cartwright.

David Barackman uses hand gestures in giving his speech. Participating in many important contests, Speech Club members worked to write and give award winning speeches. The club's members participated in the Voice of Democ- racy and the Bill of Rights tournaments. The topics were based on the name of each contest. Students in the club also competed in the annual Lion's Club Speech Contest. Advisor Al D'Ambruoso, along with club President Ja- vany Martinez and Vice-President David Barackman orga- nized the club and its members in such a way that each member had the chance to participate in each contest scheduled. The club, whose main goal was to teach its members to express themselves well in competition, had membership open to anyone who wished to participate in speech con- tests. The Speech Club developed many fine qualities in its members. Some of these were poise, self-confidence and the ability to express oneself.
