li . ii m l .. ,.. ' 9 Young, enthusiastic, and determined to win were the major attributes of the 1977 girls varsity tennis team Karen Fazio, a sophomore had one of the stron gest serves in the league and occupied the position of number one singles this year Madeline Cor dero, a Junior with one year s varsity tennis exper lence and many hours of lessons developed one of the best forms on the team Laurene Compomizzi a Junior, was known for her well developed two handed backhand and top spin forehand which made it hard for her opponents to return the ball. She filled the number three singles position. Monica Nichols, a four year varsity player, was a very experienced player. Pam Cartwright, a sen- ior, and a two year tennis veteran, performed dyn- amically at the net. Nichols' strong ground strokes and Cartwright's aggressive net play made the perfect combination for the strongest number one doubles team in the Montview League. The num- ber two doubles were sophomores, Paula Horsley and Carren Chaney. With Chaney's ability to strategically place the ball and Horsley's ability to keep the ball from her opponents, they made an excellent team. Two more sophomores, Debbie Watson and Cindy Cohen, filled the number three doubles spot. Considering the hard competition this first year team had to face, they did exception- ally well together. Karen Fazio was named Viking of the Year at the end of the season. The team also elected Fazio Most Inspirational and the number one doubles team of Monica Nichols-Pam Cartwright was voted Most Valuable. if , -7 E'!if,?!T?
