iivi' MY, , ' fy , . Study-ci way of life. Underclassmen did, and will continue to, use studying as a stepping stone to becoming upperclassmen and graduates. Students had to learn to study anywhere they could, anytime they could, and with anyone who knew the answer, like it or else. The student of '72-'73 also had to choose his own path of study to suit his individual requirements. Courses designed specifically for juniors and sophomores included English, American history and first-year Latin, Spanish, French and German. Yet with the two-semester passing rule being what it was, a senior or two was occasionally noticed drifting through underclassmen's classes, attempting to replace a lost credit here and there. JROTC goin new director Discipline is training that develops self- control and character. Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps lJROTCl is a phase of this discipline. One hundred six boys this year drilled twice weekly and received instruction in map reading, field maneuvers, marksmanship and physical training. Student officers were Mark Silvers, David Backley, Mike Banks, Phillip Dieckman, Jim Stilwell, Ceborn Miller, Jim Jordan, Ben Jones and Bobby Stephens. Adult instructors were Master Sgt. William Loyd and Sgt. First Class Tom Robinson. Colonel Choice Rucker, vvho had served as a commandant since the institution of the Northside JBOTC program in 1967, suffered a fatel heart attack in October. At midyear, Major Joseph Gardner was named director of army instruction on campus. + The football homecoming parade of Bear boosters marches down Garrison Avenue behind the tra- ditional lead of the JROTC color guard.
