Sixteen hundred fifty students contained in nearly 80 classrooms presented approxi- mately 3,300 ears attuned lor notl to class- room activities. They weren't the same all over school, however. If the hearing apparatus belonged to a junior, it might have recognized opposing views of the Civil War being dis- cussed in American history or directions being explained in the administration of the Pre- liminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. It might also have heard the NHS class ring being slipped on the body's ring finger on November 29. The student might have gone to typing and heard the claclq of keys, gone to study hall and heard the drone of snores Or the scratching of lead against paper, gone to Westark and heard the buzz of office machines, gone to gym and heard basketballs, or gone to German and heard German. The school was an infinite variety of sounds. One thing was certain, though-any ear at four o'clock on a Friday afternoon would have heard the sound of silence. il . . . Proi cts-th illustrious Northsiders this year livened their class time with special activities related to the subject of study. Projects ranged from sculptures in art to teas in home ec., and from reports in English to cedar chests in wood- working. These activities were associated with field trips, film strips, bulletin boards, drama- tizations, songs, tapes and reading lists. The creators could often taste the created meal, see the created drawing, smell the created mixture, feel the created model or hear the created music. This learning which centers around ideas that cannot be learned in books makes up a vital part of the academic program offered the students of Northside.
