Northrop football is no exception. Year in and year out, our Bruins have compiled outstanding performances. Led by Head Coach " Buzz " Doer- feller, the gridders opened the season on June 10th. With only two starters returning from last years city ru nner-up teams, the ine.xperienced Bruins had to swallow their first losing season the hard way. " I ' ve never had a team give so much and have so many heartbreakers. " re- called Coach Doerfeller. Northrop swallowed their first losing season by losing two games by a field goal in the last quarter, and four games in a row by a slim margin totaling IS points Despite these dissappointments. the team kept fighting hard and went on to dump LaPorte, Bishop Luers, Wayne and Concordia; falling only to Bishop Dwenger, North Side, Snider, Elkart Memorial and Huntington. Of these foes, six were at one time state rated. Wlien tlie final voting was over, of- fensive guard Mike Mulligan was named to tlie Ml SAC First Team. Seniors Bill Hicov. Tliev onlv allowed the opposition 99 points all season lon . and Percey Key along with juniors Dan Ivy and Mark Kem received All North recognition. Mike Mulligan and Bill Hicov, both seniors, shared tlie captain role this year. They paced the gridders all sea- son long by shutting out three teams, tliey stopped a long term winning streak of Bishop Luers, tliey also out- scored tlieir opponants by fifty points, only allowing 99 points for tlie opposi- tion all season long. Nortlirop finished the season witli 7 wins and 13 losses. The Bruins were 2 and 7 in the Summit Athletic Con- ference. Northrop was faced with die dilemna of replacing all five starters from the 75-76 campaign. Coach Bob Dille decided to do diis with 9 seniors and 7 juniors while trying many different lineups and substituting freely. Seniors on the team were guards Mark Bienz. Tim Beer. Rick Grych. Tim Martone.and Steve Riley; forwards Dan Degitz, Doug Jordan and Pierre Taylor; center Kent Bright. Of this group, Tim Beer started the most games and led the team in assists with 69. Tim Martone closed out his tliird year of varsity action. Despite their losing record, the Bruins treated Northrop fans to very exciting; basketball; they outscored their opponents in field goals and lost 3 games by 2 points. The first two iwns did not come until the middle of the season, but Northrop finished strong winning four of five games, and in sectionals was to Concordia by 1 point. Keith Edmonds was the leading scorer for the Bruin Squad averaging over 17points a game. The junior forward was also recognized by city coaches by being named honorable mention All-SAC. Junior forward Bruce Rogan led in re- bounds. Dan Degitz was the leading senior rebounder. Craig Mckinney and Arthur Jordan, bodi junior, made con- tributions as starters. Although it was a not too good of a season for Northrop, it was a valuable one tor the players and successful one as the students and parents turned out in large nubmers throughout the year. 1. I think if we had Had a game before Bishop Dwenger, whom we lost to at the begin- ning of the season, we would have done a lot better against them. " As stated by Junior Ruth Overton, " The girls played as a team. " Ruth felt that " the season went a lot belter than last year. Hours of preparation went into developing not only the sound, by poise and confience on stage. These sophomore choirs were a new ex- perience for their members in that for the first time they were not singing in coed groups. This meant for the Mens Choir a much lower tenor and bass clef was reached and for the Girls Choir the sopra- no and alto clefs were used.
