Exciting, but not impressive. Then, you become a part of the action, an actual member of the secondary educa- tional system. The excitement of seventh grade overwhelms you, but you learn to adjust, and before long you find yourself halfway through the sec- ond year of Jr. High. Then you come up against another mile- stone; the crossing over into Sr. High territory. In ninth grade your course of studies becomes important as preparation for col- lege, a job, or secretarial career. Tenth grade looms before you and soon Mr. Sines is tearing out his hair as he braves your first attempt behind the wheel. Rings are the thing in your Jr. year and the prom isn't bad either. Then it hits you, and as you pick yourself up off the floor, you realize you're finally a Senior. The struggle and tedious demands of the past five years become superficial as you walk proudly through the halls. Your victories and defeats serve only to help you develop into the adult that you are. You walk with your head in the clouds till that day when you begin to seriously ponder whether you are ready for that awe-inspiring world out- side of high school, or possibly whether it's ready for you. Uncer- tainty arises, flavored with that ever present, distinctive taste of eager curiosity. And you walk out into the world with outstretched arms, only to see much that needs done; but you accept the chal- lenge and you know that you will succeed. The 1973-74 North Star yearbook staff would like to give special recognition to two great artists who were essential to the com- pletion of our yearbook this year. Elaine Schlosnagle crea- tively used our theme of growth through the six years of high school, and into it incorporated the colors and flower of this year's graduating class for the cover of our book. Vonda Teets, with the help of Elaine, expanded the theme to include the division pages, picturing the separate levels of this growth. Their help was gratefully appreciated. Also, our thanks go out to each individual student in Northern High School for making this a memorable school year. Robin Butler and Patty Fauber were two of the ten members of the Pom Pom Girls who performed with the band for the first time at the Home- coming game. The next week students received two days offas the teach- ers attended the State Teachers Meeting. The football team, fresh from last week's win, played Bishop Walsh in the annual Homecoming game. We lost the game 49-12, but the spirit of the evening remained as Donna Hine- baugh was crowned Queen and a dance followed the game. Aren't homecoming games fun? Donna Hinebaugh, Homecoming Queen, was proudly escorted by her brother, Greg. The Huskie defense led by Ron Blocher, Mark Lawson, Stu Myers, Mark Frantz, Rick Durst, and Joe Wilhelm remained strong throughout the Bishop Walsh game. 17 OCTOBER held honor for the F.F.A. st udents as some of the members traveled to Kansas City where they received national recognition for their achievement in community development. The Huskies built up their confi- dence as they scored a touchdown early in The Game against arch- rival Southern. With 4th down, the Huskie offense lined up, confident they would make the necessary yardage for a Ist down. THE yearbook staff was also bustling with activities during this month. In order to raise money, the yearbook staff canvassed students, faculty and residents of the outlying communities looking for prospective fruit-cake customers. Besides selling fruitcakes, the yearbook staff also held their annual auction in November. The whole student body joined in this event as they were all given the opportunity to bid for their favorite items. The hottest items for sale proved to be the live animals as they brought cries of oohs aahs as well as lots of money from the audience. The Huskie offense met in the huddle to discuss their plan for demolishing Southern's strong defense. Ron Teats was stopped short of a first down by the Ram defense. Mark Russell ran in for a quick flip. IN early November, students gladly took one-half a day off as members of the faculty attended a teachers' meeting. Later in the month, students were given a two-and-a-half-day vacation to celebrate Thanks- giving Day. Along with the vacation, students were also rewarded with a juke box to be played during the lunch shifts. For the first few days, eager students crowded around the juke box, anxious to play their favorite songs. The juke box arrived just in time for the Dance Club to try it out at their first club meeting. Rick Durst showed his gymnastic ability while trying Northern's defense hungrily awaited the attack of the to gain yardage in the snow. Southern Rams. YEARBOOK AUCTION Raymond Bender skillfully con- ducted the auction. Who invited you? On the last day of the month, the Senior Class held it's annual Senior Party. We May Never Pass This Way Again was the theme for the party, and after all the food was consumed everyone was exhausted from dancing, many Seniors felt like never passing this way again. Did you ever get the feeling we aren't welcome here? The yearbook staff couldn't keep the smiles off their faces as anxious stu- dents raised the bids higher higher. This fuzzy little kitten was just one of the many items sold at the auction. Sandy Dice and Bonnie Yommer, along with other students and teachers, were forced to keep their coats on all day because there was no heat in the school. Juniors were informed well ahead of time of the day they would get their class rings. Chilled students anxiously watched for even a slight rise in temperature. NOVEMBER was not all fun and games as it held some solemn moments, too, Early in the month, the band presented it's annual Veteran's Day Program. Buddy Fauber looked over the choice of hit songs be- fore he made his selection. te - “+ + | toe 23 DECEMBER Julie placed her order for announcements with Mr. Becky and DeAnn were handed their class rings. Posey. December was packed with activities. Early in the month Adv. Biology students from both Northern and Southern spent a week at Camp Hickory. They learned how to identify many winter twigs. 24 JUNIORS reached that long-awaited day when their class rings finally ar- rived. Proud juniors could be seen everywhere comparing and admiring each others’ rings and showing them off to envious underclassmen. THE few Seniors who were interested, both boys and girls, took the Betty Crocker Search for the Homemaker of Tomorrow test. THE wrestling and basketball teams both started their seasons with a win. Bruce Opel held an advantage over his opposing matman. 28 Tim Frazee sprang to volley another point. DURING the middle of the month it finally snowed so much that school was closed early several days, in- cluding the last day before Christmas holidays. The whole student body and faculty were disappointed not to be able to see the Christmas program by the band and choruses. Students were entertained on lunch shifts by Jim Wampler, Marvin Wengerd, Keith Beachy, Steve Morris, Greg Kamp, Ed Sisler, and Bill Thomas--or was it Juanita Wampler, Myrtle Wengerd, Kate Beachy, Stella Morris, Ger- trude Kamp, Edna Sisler, and Wilma Thomas? Everybody got in on the action as students viewed the Oldtown basketball game and Southern wrestling match onschool time. With the entire student body behind them adding supporting screams, both teams pulled off victories. Added to their triumph over Turkeyfoot earlier in the week, the cagers savored the sweet taste of victory. Wayne Blocher gained control of his opposing matman,. The victory over Southern by the Grapplers uplifted their downtrodden spirits as they had previ- ously lost four of five matches during the month, SENIORS ventured to the Wisp to try their hand at ski- ing, though many of them got a little behind in it too. Our Senior Band per- formed at a G.C.C. basketball game; and an Antrim Bureau Show, Liquid Air, had to be canceled. FOR many students January began as a dark month as students were forced to board their buses before sun- rise. After one week of darkness, students once again traveled during daylight as school opened and closed a half hour later than usual. The executive committee of the Sophomore class dis- cussed plans of their yearly activities with Mr. Dively. Linda Wengerd caught a little shut-eye while Tammy Humberson counted the votes of her fellow sophomores. Hard-working members of our Yearbook staff diligent- - ly worked during Christmas vacation, Gossip flourished during the Sophomore class meeting. Linda Wengerd, Tammy Humberson, Mike O'Brien and Sharon Broadwater were elected as this year's class officers. Varsity boys showed enthusiasm over demolishing a Ram dummy in sym- bolizing their hopes for victory that night. FEBRUARY was welcomed in with a pep rally before the Southern game. A major happening in the month was the strike by Independent truckers which left schools vacant for a week. Students were given tests concerning their opinions and values in different areas of human development. WITH the ending of February North- ern found six of its wrestlers in the Bi-County Tournaments held at Valley. Those winning by deci- sion were Bruce Opel and Wilmer Warnick, by pin Blake Brenneman, and by forfeit, Steve Morris. Greg Kamp placed by default and Craig Speicher by second best record. Only one grappler, Craig won at Districts with a 2-1 record, send- ing him to Regionals at Hagers- town, where he was decisioned 10-0. Don Wampler wound up for a long jump shot in the Bruce game. CLUB activities fired up enthusi- asm among students. The FHA held a Guess the number of can- dy hearts contest. Or does our wisdom and experience along with hardness put us among adults? And, Father, what name shall You give us? Will You remember our faults, our shortcomings and our hatreds and know us as evil? Or will You recall Your mercy and compassion and call us forgiven? We pray that You would know us as Your children! Let us dream our highest dream, and work to see it come true, yet not live our lives in dreams, but rather live each day to its fullest, seeing every common object, smelling every sweet flower and delighting in every moment given us. Teach us to accept ourselves, our talents and faults, and make the most of them, so that we also accept others, their talents and faults, and make the most of our relationship with them. May we, Lord, always look down at ourselves in humility, look across this earth in brother- hood and look upward in faith to You. Then, with the election of sophomore officers, the skepticism changed to anticipation. Greg Humberson served as our president, with Jeff Layman, Donna Hinebaugh and Jon Platter filling the jobs of vice president, secretary and treasurer, respectively. Robin Thomas was selected as a Sr. majorette; Julie Liven- good and Donna Hinebaugh became members of the cheerleading squad. There were two varsity wrestlers during our sophomore year, Jon Platter and Rick Broadwater. Greg Humberson, Sam Opel, Stu Myers, Cliff Sisler and Ron Blocher were 10th grade football Lettermen. Greg and Ron also lettered in baseball. For a lot of sophomores, the most memorable event was probably the picnic at New Germany, where, fortunately, nobody decided to drown or freeze to death?! Since time waits for no one, we suddenly turned a corner and found ourselves as juniors, ordering class rings, plan- ning and earning money for the Senior's Prom and wishing we could fit into their shoes. Because of the new Early Graduation program, Nancy Frazee, Bennie Pook, Debi Kissner, and Dan Tice found themselves filling those senior shoes, Everyone else just had to endure or enjoy the coming year. To lead our anxious class, we elected Jon Plat- ter, president; Dorien Friend, vice president; Linda Hollada, secretary; and Linda Hinebaugh, treasurer. Linda also joined the majorette squad and represented us as the junior princess in the Autumn Glory Pageant. Her escort was Mike Swauger.
