Through great determin- ation and ability they did just that. The pictures above show a few scenes of Andrew's Army in action. September was also a time for football, and this meant hours and hours of practice, Led by Coach Vent, the Husky Puppies showed great enthusiasm and desire to win, As a tenth grader, Phil Dice gets his turn at the wheel under the direction of Mr. Douds. All sophomores get a chance to increase their driving skills. Last but not least; what could be more exciting than a bird's eye view of the garbage can? The wild antics of the Junior Band are seen almost every day. . .Miss Mil- ler's desk may have been neat in the first month of school, but now... Mr. Epstein, poet-writer, visits English classes at Northern once a week . - Mrs. Sines takes a few moments of her precious time to yell at her faithful staff. iti OUROCAHSe 12 Football season was in full swing at this time. Our Homecoming Queen, Karmen Glotfelty, was escorted by Julius Carey, Andrew's Army was also having their victories, cheered on by our J. VV. Cheerleaders. 13 choo! Norther Hig Meir 4 ue cosseliman ee cammnnt: PD alll ’ Driver Education students, taking full advantage of the beautiful October weather, drive Mr. Douds to his destination. The battling football team once again drove for yardage in order to win critical games. The Autumn Glory parade was highlighted by the Princess’ float, along with Queen Gloria and her maids of Honor. Obviously, the school didn't pay their water bill and the drinking fountain was removed, (?) The Senior Band paid tribute to Veterans on Veterans day ina short, simple ceremony by the flag in front of NHS, The Immortals provided musical entertainment at the annual Home- coming Dance, 15 Se Various activities took place during October. A repairman was summoned to fix a broken water fountain, Screams were heard throughout the gym when snakes were brought out during an Antrim Bureau Show. Northern met Southern on the football field and in a girls' basketball game. The develop- ment of a cocoon into a butterfly was a big attraction in room 116. 16 NOVEMBER The third annual Yearbook auction was a major highlight of Novem- ber. Teachers and students joined in a spirit of fun. Auctioneers Raymond Bender and Frank Murray donated their time and voices to bring the North Star Staff a grand total of $337.65. A new feature, lasting through December, took place in the Se- nior Home Ec. class. Mrs. DeWitt taught the art of cake decorating. Cakes were displayed to the public at PTSA. 17 et 18 November entertainments were foot- ball and girls' basketball. Instead of the usual winter's snow, Mother Nature sent ice, ice, and more ice. Preparing for basketball season, boys started spending evenings after school for practice. 19 With the band playing, majorettes and cheerleaders performing, and everyone clapping, we sing our school song during a pep session on the lunch shifts. High Homerooms in the Magazine Campaign, 7A and 11D, received a pizza party as their reward. The Pep Band practiced regularly in preparation for their performances at football games. 20 November comes to an end at last! Juniors are thrilled, as al- ways, at the thought of receiving their rings. And of course, every= one is excited at the thought of Christmas coming and of the snow which has fallen. The wrestlers are hard at work getting in shape for the coming season. Garrett County's 3rd Jr. Miss Pag- eant was held on Dec. 2, 1972, with Nancy Frazee, Brenda Frazee, Pauline Hanft participating. Miss Eileen Blackman, Maryland's Jr. Miss, along with Ellen Hersh- berger, Garrett County's Jr. Miss 1971, crowned Miss Theresa Harvey from Southern, Jr. Miss 1972. Mrs. Benyak's Home Ec. class created delights for the Christmas holidays. DECEMBER Omens ee we bese « ; : 21 aa di) Cig 2 WS Le ED iY, a Z Le Minh 22 Along with preparations for the great event of the Senior Party, December activities included a pep rally to introduce the Basketball and Wrestling teams. A wrestling match with Southern on school time provided an opportunity to watch the Grapplers perform for the student body. Mr. Posey met with Seniors to dis- cuss graduation announcements, Se- nior keys and pins. 23 The Sr., Jr., and 7th grade chor- uses presented a wonderful program for the Christmas season. The songs included the Halleluia Cho- rus from the Messiah. Miss Harris, French student teacher for the second term, gave 9-Ba party consisting of French foods. During the Sr, Tea, seniors feasted on several delicate pastries. Miss Theresa Harvey from Southern was crowned by Miss Eileen Black- man, Maryland's 1971 Jr. Miss. 24 JANUARY January--a new year, new resolutions, a new beginning! The ski club purchased a pair of skis to be loaned to members. In the picture at the right, Don Richter takes first place in the annual Oratorical Contest sponsored by the American Legion. Donkey Basketball, spon- sored by Varsity cheerleaders as a fund-raising project, came in with a bang. Sophomores began their first drive to raise money as Rex found its way into their hands. = ade 2 J)ONKEY BASKETBALL — fener Far Oe Pome Fireman Albans Pl et aad pear: : nf ethern High , Jan.ab, 415. ¢00RN. Among these were wrestling and club initiation. Lunch shifts were highlighted by solos anda group feature of the feminine Lettermens' singing the school song. An important change took place when Miss Wucik moved from the Business Department to the reading room to take the position of Vocational Guidance Counselor. : 26 27 The Sammy Hall Singers' stay in Garrett County proved to be eventful for Northern. Sammy and his gang brought fun, laughter, music, and something to think about. In return, students showed their Husky spirit in two standing ovations. As January ends, the student body is quite excited about the annual Northern-Southern basketball game. Jeff Layman is one member of our hard working team in this game. The wrestlers are hard at work every wrestling match. Our small but powerful Jr. High Basketball team is also striving to come on top! 28 February opened with a variety of activities. The 7th graders were thrilled and excited about Billy's real live guinea pig; the whole student body was treated to an Antrim Bureau show about ''the Living Camera , the eye; and the Jr. High students viewed a film as a result of their effort in selling magazines. The FFA, also very active this month, was presented a new Ford tractor by Mr. Clayton Arnold. The newly formed Jr. High Chapter of the FFA was presented a charter by Mr. James Pope, State Execu- tive Secretary of the FFA. 29 COR tee Snow in the midst of winter in Garrett County became an oddity during 1972 and 1973. Capturing the white gold near the school house was indeed a freak accident. However; later through the month, snow became more apparent anda special offer of half-price on rentals and lift tickets was offered to Northern students and faculty at the Wisp. Crowds of people visited Northern in the evenings to give the basket- ball team moral support, while others took careof their private lives. February participated in the ordeal of three months of converting the boilers to fuel oil heat. No more carrying the coal in five gallon buckets, eh janitors? The J. V. basketball players, providing preliminary entertainment for Varsity basketball games, once again begin another grueling night. The annual Heart Fund Campaign, sponsored by the Nike Club, in- volved the entire student body. The Campaignwasclimaxed by a game between Andrews! Army and Bishop Walsh, Half-time ceremon- ices included comments by Mrs. Lewis, Executive Secretary of W. Md. Heart Association, who crowned the Queen, Debi Thomas. Bob Frazee presented the queen with red roses. Senior Chorus members began preparation for musical drama Fiddler on the Roof as they auditioned forroles. x Fe 33 MARCH Miss Wucik's Career Corner, Northern's new vocational guidance center, progressed rapidly with several job opportunities posted during March. Kathy Russell represented Northern at the Science and Humanities Symposium on March 22-24 at Baltimore. Cathy Reckner, Terri Georg, Steve Morris, and Kevan Monn completed an enlightening weekend band work- shop at Shenendoah Conservatory of Music, Winchester, Var Another addition to Northern's livestock, the new baby lambs grew quite rapidly. We ask with Shelly, O wind, if winter comes, can spring be far behind? No matter how mild a winter may be, people are always excited about the advent of sprnig. But Garrett County spring is always marked by one or two snow-storms beautifying the still bare woodlands. After a seemingly endless waiting period, electricity was provided to the school barn. The final hookup was a result of hard work and learning by all involved. However, the learning didn't end with the hookup, as both Mr. Loughrie and Steve Wiley are sure to point out. For the first time in the history of Northern High wrest- ling, a wrestler placed in the State. Lee Sutherland, a senior wrestler in the 155 1b. weight class, placed third in the state. Lee is one of only two from the county to do so since wrestling tournaments began. TC NSS S _ . RES Nee CLASS PRAYER God, Our futures are uncertain; yet we have our goals. We feel insecure and yet the world has bound us. We are so inexperienced; yet we are what we are because of all that we have experienced. Our hearts are filled with unspoken dreams; yet we yearn for a life of reality. We feel alone in our tumult; yet others have experienced the same. We are searching for the Truth; yet we know Your way. This time is filled with tears of good-bye; yet life is calling our name. In spite of the tum- ults and doubts, in spite of our human frailties, we can look to the future withFaith, knowing that with You, we cannot fail; without You, we can never succeed. The long years of sharing and friendship that have brought us this far are all behind. For these memories and the people who have played their part in them, we thank You, God. Bless each of our lives; help us to reach out to others so that by helping others, we can help ourselves. Guide us with Your Spirit, and point the way ahead. Encircle us with Your Love, and clasp Your hand in ours, now and always.
