The student body of Northern High School, on wishing him farewell, dedicates this yearbook with heartfelt grati- tude to Mr. Ralph Beachley, Vice-Principal, in recogni- tion of his long years of devoted service to Northern High School. rtnten nent ye. % Stee ae ty 3 é x Life is immortal. It has outlived all the changes of numerous ages. Life is precious. It is powerful, and a part of it is entrusted to each of us. The real test is how we use it, whether in frustration and self-pity or as master. Those who lived magnificently did so whether circumstances were kind or harsh. Each person must account for the way he lives his part of it. You can sit on the sidelines or shoulder your load and travel on. Life is forever. --Robert N. Mr. Keplinger Mrs. Pavone Miss Miller AES, Class Prayer By: Beverly Rush Dear Lord, We thank Thee for the blessings of the past which have made our graduation possible. We thank Thee for the support and prayers of our parents, the patience and devotion of our teachers, and the fellowship and comrade- ship of our classmates. Thou hast given us the mental gifts and physical health to achieve the goals we have reached and hast blessed our efforts with success. Forgive us for the opportunities we have neglected, for our failure to do our best in every situation, and for any wrongs which we have committed during our school years. Help us to use our talents and improved abilities to Thy glory and for the betterment of mankind. Let us ever walk in Thy ways and give us a deeper understanding of Thy good and gracious will. We ask it in Jesus' name. Amen. LAA MLR eee oe sie MMF US MOAN OOO — RAGGA EIT AAAS VATE ES 58) Class Prophecy I guess we all are wondering where our friends are going to be and what they will be doing, aren't we? Let's take a look into Zelda's crystal ball. First, we see Virginia Wakefield in the slums of New York, counseling teenagers. Assisting her are Barbara Bowser, Bonnie Buckel, and Lynn Sutherland. What's this? It's the last day of school; and Mary Turner, teacher, is packing her books in preparation for her summer vacation with Dan. There are Gary Layman and Christie, just back from the super market, talking to Nancy Strauss, now Mrs. Dana Umbel, over the fence. Hey, ther's Patty Michael practically tearing her hair out trying to teach Linda Frantz and Terry Stanton's youngest daughter to play the piano. Well, look at this! There's Terry Goehringer, now a secret agent for the FBI, coming home from a hard day's work; and what is Debbie Pugh, his wife, doing ?--giving Nancy Uphold a permanent while Chris Thomas, her assistant, is giving Sarah Shaffer one of the new hair cuts. Oh, it can't be! Harriette Falkner, Joyce Reese, Karen Leonard, and Pauline Hoover are all trying their best to save Elaine Fike's horse. She's now Mrs. Dale Garlitz. They couldn't reach the vet, so they called the nearest hospital. Now we see Linda Fike and her husband, Harold, at a P.T.A. meeting talking to Karen Markel about their son. In the next room we see Wilbur Lowdermilk and his wife talking with Philip Miller, Principal. Everyone seems to be moving toward the cafetorium. No wonder- -Karla Barnes is providing the entertainment. There's Lois Hunter, now Mrs. James Savage, talking with Larry and Jim Glotfelty about building them a new house. We see a beautiful farm scene, and backing out of the driveway with her six children is the the former Mary Silber, now Mrs. Savage. She's on her way to keep an appointment with Karen Bowman, interior decorator. F.S.C. has now become one of the largest institutions of learning in Md., and in the Art Dept. we see Sharon Wiley and Alice Vitez as teachers. While attending a World Series Game in Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, we see Allen Hetz, freshman Con- gressman from the sixth District of Md. With him is Bob Hesson, an assistant director in the Dept. of Forest and Parks. As we look into the giant offices of 1.B.M., we see Betty Lowdermilk, Verna Butler, and Penny Bittinger, all with good jobs as secretaries or stenographers. : Our crystal ball shows us several happy homes with Arlene Gatterman, Eliza Cosner, and Mary Caton as the contented housewives. A T.V. set comes into view. It's the Ed Sullivan Show; and Ed is introducing the new musical comedy sensa- tion, starring Mike Oliverio and Randy Bender. As our crystal ball zeros in on a construction site, we see several old classmates who have become skilled in various trades. Kermit Beitzel is a brick layer. Poor Kermit wanted so badly to become a millionaire. Vaughn Friend is also seen busy at work here in the building trade. As we are about to leave the scene, we see another old classmate--Paul Bittinger--waving from the seat of some type of heavy equipment machine. As we look into a large downtown store, we see several old acquaintances. There are Shirley Hetrick, Karen Snelson, Bonnie Minnick, and Lisa Durst. We see Larry Lewis as a truck driver for the State Roads Commission; Eddie Hauser is a successful machinist. A visit to the London Theatre is a real treat as the spot light focuses on Bill Aiken doing an intricate ballet number. We see a wide expanse of water, and our crystal ball shows us a setting somewhere in England.. In a cozy little cottage, we see Roxanne Thomas, now Mrs. Savage. 56 A commanding voice catches our attention; and we hear, Leon, will you please empty the garbage? The voice turns out to be that of Mary Butler, now Mrs. Leon Beitzel. Goodness, it looks as if Jim Kahl and Donald Schmidt are now two of the best electricians in the business. There must be some mistake --Chris Bailey taking Twiggy's modeling job. No, it's true. As we see another town coming into view, we find Betty Savage and Bonnie Hetrick working as clerks. In the same town we see that Donnie Friend has just become the president of the bank. Working along with him are Angie DeWitt and Debbie Garlick. Appearing next are Janet Coddington, Darlene Rosenberger, and Louise Fike, all happily married and working part time as beauticians. Janet has just dyed a woman's hair, and it turned out --greenish brown. Oh, no! Now we go to a laboratory, and we see Steve Vincent and Rachel Yoder looking through microscopes, while Paul Maust is working with test tubes, and Darlene Gatterman is working as his assistant. There's Debbie Bender, now an elementary school teacher, trying to get Neil Giconi, presiding judge, to forget about that ticket she got for speeding. Next we see a beautiful, large farm. Arliss Yoder is the owner. And there's Ron Dolan, his foreman. As we leave the farm, we see a small town; and there's Dick Lansberry hanging a sign on a huge building. The sign reads: ''Lansberry's Funeral Home . Now a huge office is seen, and we see Glenda Folk working as the head journalist. Donna Coddington and Linda Sebold, working as private secretaries, are also found in this building. The next picture clears; and we see that George Beitzel, Jim VanSickle, and Sherman Savage are now the owners of a Large Trucking line. Three people are walking out of the building with their orders for the day. They are Dave Butler, Sam Wakefield, and Joe Miller. The next picture is blurred--now it's clear; it's Fort Knox, Kentucky. There are three familiar faces, John Leonard, Bill Kamp, and Lorraine McGhee. Now we see an air force base, and the Commanding Officer and the General are working at a desk. It can't be, but it is--Bill Mosser and Bill Umbel. We're moving to the ocean. We see that someone said the wrong thing to the Commanding Officer, and now he's paying for it. Norman Livingood is hard at work swabbing the deck. The scene changes, and we see the Bell Telephone Co. where Jack Coddington, Harry Cupplo, Mike Frickey, and Mike Downton are now employed. They seem to be satisfied, ,)’ The Westinghouse Co. comes irité view, and here we find Gary Hetrick and Lott VanSickle trying to figure out how to get that big refrigerator through that little door. ” The scene disappears, and we find Sandy DeWitt, now Mrs. Iden, waiting on a customer at a fashion shop. The customer appears to be Barbara Klotz, who is in a hurry because her husband, Joe, is impatiently Waiting outside. Boy, the whole gang must be working as mechanics! There are Marshall Bittinger and Gary Teats trying to find out what's wrong with Leona Butler's car. And there are Fred Humberson, Rodney Horchler, Rick Platter, and Bob Brode taking time out for lunch. We see two other fellows here that look like John Lapp and Allen Duck- worth. Allen wanted to be a motorcycle racer, but it doesn't look as if he made it. He surely didn't; his right leomistin aucast. Ken Jenkins is the owner of a heavy equipment garage. Working with him is Roddy Paul, his assistant, and Beverly Rush, his secretary. It seems that Bev is trying to show Jean Savage the duties of her position. Now it's clearer--Bev is preparing to take a trip around the world. 57 The picture changes again; and we see Bonnie Turner, now Mrs. Stanton, talking with Sylvan Wiland and Keith Baasland about that leak in the bathroom. She's sure that they didn't install the sink properly. Boy, what's this--the circus. The show has begun, and there's Kelly Uphold as the midget. He knew that he was short for some reason or other. In the audience we see two more classmates, Leroy Butler and Richard Carlson. Here we are kids, back at NHS. Here we find that Karen Brabson has taken over Mrs. Smith's job. In the Art Dept. we see Evalena Yoder, filling the position as art teacher. There's a familiar face walking down the street; it's Phyllis Hutzel, who is now manager of the Ruth Enlow Library. The scene changes again, and we see Fred Oester and Guy Platter making cabinets for the new house going up on the other side of town. Here we go. It seems that Roger Cutler and Richard Younkin decided there wasn't enough recreation in this county, so they have had a huge recreational center built and business looks good. As the picture starts to fade, we see Lois Friend still at home. She's decided that she likes Garrett County more than she thought. The crystal ball clears and that's the end of our adventure. ; ¥ ‘ : ‘ : E “ oo ge seep 58 Daisy Beiler Rick Bender a Sharon Bender Sherry Bender Karen Bittinger Patsy Bittinger = Rosalie Bittinger Sharon Bittinger Patty Blocher Hazel Bowser Larry Bowser Ronald Bowser Sheila Bowser Darlene Brabson President Darlene Brant Melva Brant Terri Wengerd = Nancy Brenneman Susan Brenneman Rose Brode David Burow —— Bonnie Butler Doug Carey : Larry Clark Donald Crowe Sharon Cuppett Janice DeWitt Linda_Dietle Ronald DeWitt Michele Duda 60 David Dur st Kay Durst = ie Linda Durst Paul Durst Peggy Durst Shirley Durst Dwight Eichorn Wayne Ellis’ Kathy Enlow Nancy Fike Leo Fadeley Sheila Finzel Claudia Flanagan Alleen Frazee Vice-President ¥ aes Re Se f Debbie Frazee a Karen Frazee 4.
