Yearbook Staff The group seated below volunteered to take on the responsibility of producing the 1956 North Star. The staff is divided into committees. They are: sports, business and advertising, pho- tography and art, and write-up and social. Mr. Davis very ably sponsors this group. Newspaper Stuff The students seated above also take on the job of collecting, editing. and having printed a school news- paper, also under the able direction of Mr. Davis. Library Club The love of books brings these students together. They keep filing in order and attend to issuing reminders to students who have overdue books. Making interesting displays and keeping books in repair occupies much of their time. This ef- ficient group is headed by Eva Schroyer, Vida Schroyer, Judith Friend, and Carol Kinsinger serve as vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. Mr. Kesner is the faculty sponsor. Bus Patrol The Bus Patrol was designed primarily to maintain good discipline on the busses. In doing so, each student is pro- tected from minor and major bus hazards. Parents, teachers, students, and bus drivers feel much more secure in knowing that these capable people are doing their jobs well. Jr. F. H. A. The Ir. High Future Homemakers of Amer- icais a national organization for girls in- terested in homemaking. In order to be eligible for membership in the club, a girl must have completed one year of home economics and must be in either the eighth or ninth grade, Service to home, school, community, and self are the aims of the club. Patty Friend presides over this active group and is assisted by Patty Frazee. Other officers are: Susan Bowman, secretaryg Teresa Layman, treas- urer, Dorothy Savage, reporterg Anne Friend, Historiang Shirley Fike, Song Lead- ergand Shirely Schlossnagle, social chair- man, Miss Lipscomb sponsors this group. ll Pep Club The Pep Club, under the sponsorship of Miss Tiano. has had many worthwhile activities. It has been responsible for all pep rallies, publicity for ball games, and several sales projects. The club officers are: President- Luanna Fikeg Vice-President- Audrey S. Kinsingerg Secretary- Gloria McCullough: Treasurer- Hazel Mosser.

Photography Club The Photography Club was organized this November, under the sponsorship of Mr. Riggs. They hope to achieve know- ledge by the end of the year in picture taking, making the print, enlarging and developing the film. Delores Frazee presides in this active group while Carol Fike is vice -presi- dent. Joanne Collier and Mary Ellen Speicher are secretary and treasurer, respectively, Dixieland Band The Dixieland Band is a musical group made up of a group of Northern High School girls under the sponsorship of Mr. Schwing. This group presents a particular type of music known as Dixieland music. The group was organized in 1955 and has played for band programs and the band minstrel this past winter. The group's many listeners feel that they are out- standing and most entertaining. It is hoped by all that they will be seen and heard more frequently in the future. The group includes: Dorothy Edgar-trombone, Juanita Buckel-bass clarinet. Thelma Savage-drums, Donna Edwards-clarinet, Elsie Wright -cornet. Helen Selby-piano. Science Club The Science Club is divided into two parts, biological science and physical science, according to the students' inter- ests. Membership into the Science Club ofAmerica is the group's immediate goal. Some of the club's projects have been completed and many are underway. The completed projects are: the tanning of animal skins and the mounting of animals. Projects underway are the construction of motors, the practice of taxidermy, and the collecting of Garrett County conifers and seeds. Larry McCurdy holds the gavel in this newly organized club. Randall Harman, Reed Layman and Martin Friend are vice-president, secretary, and treas- urer, respectively. Mr. Strauss and Mr. Keplinger sponsor the group. Dramofics Club One of the highlights of the year was the presentation of a hillbilly comedy, Great Smokies, by the group. A dramatic play The Storm was presented in a state dramatic festival in the spring. All productions were under the direction of Miss Tobin, Actors and actresses are: Joe Bender, Rose Lee Chaney, Janet Coddington, Dorothy Glotfelty, Kenny Glot- felty, Gail Kesner, Vida Schroyer, and Ross Selby. They have studied such branches of dramatics as television, radio, stage vernacular, debating and pantomiming. 19
