' P eUcCcHt ' TfCe a e To complete successfully the scholastic requirement of a college course is the attainment of an important goal for any person, but to enrich college life by participation in the variovis worth-while activities outside the classroom is to increase manyfold the satisfaction of achievement. You may well be proud of the activities of your class, many of which are recorded in the pages of this CAULDRON. I am mindful of the fine spirit which the Class of 1954 has evidenced in all causes which the University has sponsored. The splendid support of the Library Building Fund is an example. I am glad that you have been able to see and to enjoy the result of your endeavors while still in college; I am de- lighted that the Library became a part of your undergraduate days. This is not always true in life. Sometimes the goal is far beyond the horizon and we may never see the final results of our work. You will discover as you go through life that your journey toward success is like climbing a mountain — each hill reveals a still higher peak ahead. But the satisfaction of reaching and overcoming each obstacle along the way is an inspiration and challenge to continue on to the higher peaks. My sincere best wishes to each of you as you leave your Alma Mater. May your success in college be multiplied many times in the years ahead.

ecUcatca One day at an activities meeting a debate was raging. The minority leader had only one solid argument in his favor — eventually even that was challenged. I didn ' t read it anywhere, the student admitted meekly, but Dr. Cutts told me. The room fell silent. The point was won. Elmer H. Cutts is best known to the University and the community as a scholar and a lecturer. At both he is un- paralleled. Even in the field of human relations the quiet, mild-mannered teacher from Colorado excels. After taking his undergraduate and master ' s degrees at the University of Washington, Dr. Cutts came East to earn his Ph.D. at Harvard University. He joined the Northeastern University Day College faculty in 1941, and following a two- year tour of duty with the Army in Europe, became head of the newly re-organized History-Government Department in 1947. The author of various scholarly treatises on Indie civiliza- tion. Professor Cutts began work in 1951 on World Civiliza- tion Before Christ , now partially published, but still in- complete. In this project he is being aided by his wife, Amelia, herself a Greek scholar. Dr. Cutts has managed, in addition to his intellectual activities, to maintain the interest in sports that von him a letter in cross-country as an undergraduate at Washington University. Besides faculty bowling, he is an avid hand- ball enthusiast, and started the Faculty Handball League here at Northeastern. To this friend of students, to this inspiring teacher and scholar, to this athlete we dedicate the 1954 edition of the CAULDRON.
