Northeastern's science department oFlers a background in the basic sciences and a chance to continue in the advanced courses of physics and chemistry. Each course provides the student with an appreciation for and o general comprehension ot what is taking place in the world of science. In addition to the formal classroom work, science-minded pupils are given an opportunity to display their talents by participating in the annual science fairs of the surrounding area. The aim of any mathematics program is to develop clear, logical thinking. Ours at Northeastern is divided into three specihc phases, academic, commercial, and general, with some degree of specialization in each department. The aca- demic department contains the advanced courses ot mathematics for college- bound students. The work tor all groups is geared to the mastery ot fundamentals and to interpreting the puzzling intricacies ot numbers The goal ot the department is to treat mathematics as a living, growing subiect, which calls tor new and better teaching techniques, many of which have already become part ot our mathematics program. 11
