UH A Student drivers. Margie Baldwin, Jerrie Peiffer, Linda Powers. Sharrell Nichols, and Claude Sher- rill, practice in their Drivotrainers. Mr. Milliron, Driver's Education instructor, re- cords results of Drivotrainers as students follow instructions on the film. Northeast Students Appreciate Privileges of Cars When Henry Ford, American inventor and manufacturer, completed his first automobile, a whole new world soon came into being, and from that first car our nation has now become a country where cars are among the most impor- tant possessions we own. They have become a status symbol to many, only transportation to some, but to most teenagers, an exciting and fascinating necessity. However thrilling the privilege of driving may be, the average high school driver realizes the seriousness of his responsibility. He is aware that no other undertaking offers a stronger challenge to cool judgment, skill, and good sportsmanship. He feels that, judged by the requirements of mental alertness, adherence to the rules, professional knowledge of tools, and sober judgment, driving an auto- mobile makes many other accomplishments seem trivial by comparison. The path of the competent driver, veteran or youth, is lined with codes of good sportsmanship and respect for the power beneath the foot-pedal and the techniques involved in every simple or complex maneuver of the ton or more of steel under his control. Knowing these things to be true and important to Northeast students, the Nordlys Staff has chosen as its theme for this year . . . Cars, and we take pleasure in presenting our new model for this year, the 1965 Nordlys. Straining their eyes and ears, two Northeast students, Mike Press and Stan Seaton, conduct an experiment on Northeast's electronic equipment. Northeast is fortunate in having one of the few electronic departments in the state of Oklahoma. Qports and Play-pro students, Hubert Farbes, Dean Simmons, and Ann Hirschi, performed in an assembly early this year to promote school spirit and enthusiasm. They presented to the student body examples of what type student each of us should be. 6 Academics Make Up Pari of Northeast's Chassis The oilers Jimmy Nelson, Arthur Sanders. Dennis Powers. Terry Haynes. Julian Harris, and Mike Kcrran. support our team with their enthusiasm'and by taking the responsibility of lighting ihe oil well when the Northeast team scores. Our Drum Major, Tommy Jones, care- fully places the crown on Delores San- chez, Band Queen, as the band plays “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.” The attendants were Beverly Jones, escorted by Kenny Willis, and Joyce Tippin, es- corted by Ernest Caesar. 7 Vikings Steer Their Way to Victory Come on you, Norsemen, get that ball, Fight, fight! And carry it to victory, Fight, fight! For crimson is our fighting blood, Fight, fight! And silver is our goal, you see, Fight, fight! Come on you, Norsemen, hold that line, Fight, fight! Well sing your praises to the sky. We ll cheer again, here's to victory; We'll win the game for Northeast High. With Pep 9 When hustling through the halls to classes, a Norseman may hear a good-natured laugh, a voice raised in anger, the clang- ing of a locker door as it is shut, the humming of a new tune, and the ringing of footsteps. In a classroom, the slamming of textbooks on the desk, the scrape of chairs as everyone settles down for an hour of learning, the rise and fall of the teacher’s voice, the hum of the radiator as it starts its process of warming, the buzzing of the students as the teacher leaves the room, and the quiet of a test broken only by the scratching of pens. Laughter, applause, songs, cheers—all of these make the rafters ring during assemblies. Silence reigns when one pauses for a moment of study in an empty hall, or when the doors close on the quiet halls of a deserted Northeast. At a game reverberate the yells of enthusiasm, the school song as we wing our way to victory, and the jubilant shouts of the boys as one more game is added to their list of conquests. Yet some things are not heard but felt. They are the superabundant spirit of students and faculty every time the school song is sung, the surge of pride as new honors come to Northeast, and the ever-recurring wonder of that deep loyalty felt toward Northeast after graduation. 10 Qound of Motor Hums Through Northeast Northeast s mascot, Victor the Viking, welcomes Gisle Sporbcrg. our foreign exchange student from Germany, to Northeast High School. We have enjoyed Gisle's being with us this year, and we hope she enjoyed us as much. Picking Up Momentum Ninth grade boys and girls attended a family .relations clinic given at the first of the year by the Board of Educa- tion. 12 Pam Philpott is one of the North- east students who has become fa- miliar with the new fad of skate- boards. Wheels of Northeast Begin to Whirl Linda Winchester and Mrs. Burleson count votes at the election for a new Student Council treasurer. 13 Pam Vaughn, Norket Pep Club president, welcomes Gisle Sporberg with a gift, a Norket necklace, at the Norket coke party given in Gisle’s honor early this year. Instruction and Activities 14 Mr. Edgar Lawrence, a sub- stitute teacher for Mr. Requa Hawkins, gladly helps Wayne Dill and Carolyn Hall with their problem. Voices of Northeast Cheerleaders, Susan Hicks. Jerri Stillwell, Jean Anne Shelton, Connie Cox, Sherry Hillis, and Carol Glaze, ring in the air as they cheer our football boys on to victory at the Northeast vs. Classen game. Spark Life Info Curriculum As our football boys run onto the field, the Norket Pep Club cheers them on to victory. 15 Present and future football players watch football game from the side line. Vikings Roll Toward Destination Maurice Coffey gets that extra bit of strength to carry him onward. Viking Varieties performers practiced long and diligently, but were rewarded by the applause of the audience. Here play-pro puts on their skit. HENRY ETTA ELLIS 7th and 10th Grade Counselor LANCE CUDJOE 9th and 11th Grade Counselor BILL WALTMAN 8th and 12th Grade Counselor The Northeast library is used every day by many students. Because of its 12,000 books, the 5S reference books and available author information, a student can find material on any subject. The fall book fair held in the library gave students an opportunity to purchase an in- teresting and educational book covering any field. JOAN PRYSE Head Librarian LINDA REESE Library Clerk Mr. Cudjoe, 11th Grade Counselor, helps Sharon Coleman with a problem. Maintenance Engineer Keep Parts Running Qmoothly Custodians Sitting: Burt Long, Orb Burom, A. C. Brasher. Standing: Mr. Burnett, head custodian, and Shorty Jones. Keeping Northeast corridors clean and warm and 1300 teenagers well fed is the goal and duty of the custodians and the cafeteria staff. Under the direction of Mrs. Sally O'Haver, supervisor of the cafeteria, the staff prepares a variety of menu selections served during the three lunch periods each day. Ten floormen, under the supervision of Mr. T. F. Burnett, clean and maintain the school in working condition all through the year. Also, because the grounds are kept up beautifully, the Vikings are proud of their school both inside and out. Its purpose is to promote citizenship, leader- ship, and democracy as well as student activities. Citizenship is carried out by each student participating in the Student Council. Leadership is promoted through the Student Council officers and committee Chairmen. Students practice democracy by electing both the council officers and two homeroom representatives in school elections. Student Council activities this year have included the signing of a sportsmanship pledge, participation in the Toys for Tots Drive, a Courtesy Week, and a safety program aimed at school and traffic safety. The social and publicity committees helped to provide after-game mixers, and the directory committee published the annual student directory. 90 COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN: From Row: Bill Vaughn, Doug Hopkins. This busy and capable staff participates in many varied activities besides the production of the yearbook itself. Clinics held in Norman, Still- water, and Edmond were attended, and staff members came back with new ideas to use in their work. To learn more about yearbook production, staff members were required to write on twenty-four articles taken from various journalism magazines. Routine work such as stamping and identifying pictures, cropping and proportioning, planning layouts, and selling the books have also contributed toward the creation of a suc- cessful yearbook. Mrs. ZaZelle Gifford Sponsor Play Production Make-up is a part of the life of every actress. Northeast students enjoy the many fine productions presented by our speech department each year. Long hours arc spent rehearsing for a play or on a particular speech to be used in a tourna- ment. To be a member of Thespians or National Forensic League requires more skill than realized. Twenty-five points must be earned before membership is granted. Under the direction of Mrs. ZaZelle Gif- ford, these organizations have won many honors for Northeast. At the half way point of the year Northeast had nineteen students who had qualified for the regionals. Northeast came in second in tw'o Sweep- stakes, losing first only because of the lack of a debate team. Our choir could be heard on such holidays as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Not only has our choir per- formed for Northeast, but they have participated in many contests and clinics which have brought honorable mention to the names of our «chool, choir members, and new director, Mr. William Parks. Our choir took part in the All-City Choir Activities and the Vocal Workshop held at Colorado University during February'. Northeast should be very proud of its orchestra and its director, Miss Lois Fees. Not only does the music add to many of our assemblies and programs, but orchestra brings honor to our school in city and state contests. The orchestra teaches the students taking the course as well as the whole student body to appreciate the art of music. Several members of the orchestra played in the All-State Orchestra, which presented a concert in the Municipal Auditorium here in Oklahoma City. Others participated in the All-City Or- chestra and brought back honors from the dis- trict music contest at Weatherford. Hours of practice are needed to make a talented musician, but the long hours are well rewarded with the applause at the end of a concert and the satisfaction of having done a work well. The high school orchestra of today contains our musicians of tomorrow. 113 Northeast Band Boars to From Row: Ernest Caesar, Joyce Tippin, Isabelle Riggs, Suzanne Phillips. Through many hours of hard grueling work, the Vikings came back with a winning season, this one consisting of six wins and four losses. Under the year with Coach Gilliland, the team bettered their season's winnings with two more victories. All through the season the Vikings fought hard to hold their ground. Our defense did the job. Of course, their fine display of sportsmanship and determination enabled them to have one of the finest seasons in several years. This year's captain honors went to our right end and team punter, Dean Pierce. N. E. 0 John Marshall 32 N. E. 38 Central 0 N. E. 32 McGuinness 8 N. E. 31 Classen 14 N. E. 13 Grant 18 N. At the Sand Springs Tournament Art Shank and Paul Ray both took first in their weights, and Terry Smith placed fourth. In the City Tourney Terry Smith placed first, thus being the only wrestler from Northeast to win his event. All in all Northeast has had a good wrestling season. Through a lot of determination and hard work these wrestlers have given Northeast something to be proud of. The Vikings also had four wrestlers to place at the Regional Tournament. They were then eligible to go to the State Tournament. Coach Milliron worked these grapplers into fit condition, giving Northeast a chance to place at State. The State qualifiers were-Art Shank, Richard Shank, Paul Ray, and Leonard Henderson. Each team member, with Coach Milliron, looks on in excite- ment as his match draws near. Cars was chosen as the theme because of their effect on our daily lives. Since the car seems a necessity to today’s teenager, it has a dominating effect on his school life. Parts of a car have represented the divisions of our an- nual, three of the color pictures depict cars in various uses, and the emblem on the cover represents the head- light of the earliest car. An important part of today's education is our drivers' education program. We touched only briefly this part of cars, but it is al- most essential for drivers today. 178 Message JUDITH KYLE The staff has worked exceptionally hard to capture the spirit of the school year, and throughout the book cars are viewed from every angle. We have tried to cover the highlights of all activities and events and reproduce them effectively As your own highway veers off from Northeast High School to a new horizon, we hope you will look back through your 1965 Nordlys and see your school days come back to life. We wish to thank all who bought a yearbook and made it possible for us to present to the seniors and the entire student body and the faculty the Nordly Yearbook for 1965.
