COMMAN DIN G OFFICER CAPTAIN WILLIAM E. KUNTZ U.S.N. William Edward Kuntz was born in Leipsic, Ohio, and attended schools there until 1935 when he en- tered the United States Naval Academy. 'Upon graduation from the Naval Academy in 1939, Captain Kuntz was assigned to the U.S.S. BOISE QCL-47D . He was serving there as communications officer in August 1941 when he was detached to attend the U.S. Naval School at Bowdoin College. Upon completion, he became officer-in-charge, Radar School at Pearl Harbor. .. In July 1943 he entered the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School for a course in electronics engineering. Upon graduation in July 1945, Captain Kuntz served as assistant electronics officer at the Naval Station, Guam, and subsequently with Service Squadron Three. In August 1946 he was assigned to the U.S.S. DEHAVEN QDD-727D as executive officer and in August 1947 assumed command of the U.S.S. MARSH KDE-6991. Captain Kuntz became- director of training for the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, Sandia Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1949. He returned to sea in August 1951 as commanding officer, U.S.S. LY- MAN K. SWENSON QDD-7291 . A tour with the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as head, Combat Direction Systems Branch, Surface Warfare Division, was followed as Commander, Escort Squadron Fourteen from December 1956 to July 1958. He was subsequently assigned duties as surface warfare officer at the Office of Naval Re- search, Washington, D.C. While in this position, he attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University. In August 1961 he was assigned to duty as commanding officer, U .S.S. ALTAIR QASK-325. Captain Kuntzis assignment prior to assuming command of the U.S.S. NORTHAMPTON QCC-15 on 1 October 1964, was assistant chief of staff, Communications and Electronics, for Commander-in-chief, Southern Europe, Naples, Italy CCINCSOUTI-IJ . 4 Captain Kuntz is married to the former Joan Elizabeth Darby of Port Clinton, Ohio. Their daughter, Karen, is a student at Smith College, located in the ship's namesake city, Northampton, Massachusetts. Their older son, Jefferson, is a student at Wooster College while their younger son, Rodney, attends high school.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER COMMANDER CALVIN C. DUDLEY U.S.N. l w H 3 I 2 a Calvin C. Dudley was born on December 19, 1925, in Royston, Georgia. He attended Georgia State Col- lege in Atlanta. During the Second World War, Commander Dudley served in the Merchant Marine and received an un- limited Masters license in 1949. His date of rank as Ensign, United States Naval Reserve is November 4, 1946. He saw his first active duty with the Navy during the Korean War, and in 1956, he transferred into the regular Navy. Commander Dudley holds the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, and several Merchant Marine Service Ribbons including the Combat Bar. His duty assignments have included: Student at Gunnery Officers School, Washington, D.C., First Lieutenant on U.S.S. WHITLEY QAKA-915 , Assistant Officer in Charge of a naval unit on the Rhine River Patrol in Germany, Operations Officer and Navigator on U.S.S. KAWISHIWI QAO-1461, Student at the General Line School at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, Navigator on the U.S.S. BREMERTON QCA-1301 , Staff Commander Destroyer Squadron Nine, Executive Officer on U.S.S. MAD- DOX QDD-7315, Staff member of Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Naval Forces, Europe, located in London, England, and immediately prior to reporting to NORTHAMPTON, he was Commanding Officer on U.S.S. TURNER QDDR-8345. Commander Dudley was married to the former Joyce Brenda McKenzie of Kearsley, England on No- vember 23, 1948. They have one son, Calvin J r.
