Leaving the snow and cold behind on February 22, NORTHAMPTON began a trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for a brief recreational visit. She moored early Thursday morning, February 25, at Port Everglades, a commercial port adjacent to Fort Lauderdale. Theqsunshine, blue Waters and warm sand of Florida were Welcome changes. Nearly 6,000 Florida vacationers turned out to visit the Navy's first command ship during general visiting held Feb- ruary 27-28.

On Sunday, March 7, NORTHAMPTON celebrated her 12th annversary since commissioning. She was commissioned at the Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts, as a Task Fleet Command Ship after having been originally designated a Baltimore class cruiser when construction began in 1944. But construction-then 50 percent complete-was halted at the end of World War II. She remained on the ways at the Fore River Shipyard of Bethlehem Steel Company for the next six years, before her com- missioning as CLC-1 on March 7, 1953. On March 17, NORTHAMPTON, for the first ti ters as the main replenishment force. Refined replenishment at sea procedures using helicopters have been introduced to the fleet by U.S.S.
