Naval vessels normally have only such exercises as fueling, replenishing, rearming or scheduled fleet exercises to illustrate their readiness to act swiftly and efficiently. But NORTHAMPTON had a rare opportunity to exhibit her capabil- ity at 0315 on the 26th of the month. She was approximately eight miles from Chesapeake Bay Lightship when a distress call was intercepted from the merchant tanker S.S. San Jacinto. An anode placed in one of the ship's gigantic tanks to prevent corrosion had fallen and the resultant spark triggered a ship-splitting explosion. Both sections of the tanker were adrift with the crew surviving on the stern section. NORTHAMPTON reversed her course and proceeded at 25 knots to conduct rescue operations at the scene off Chinco- teague, Virginia. The distressed tanker was sighted at 0603. At 0604 the shipas helicopter was launched. At 0609 the rescue and assistance detail was assembled. NORTHAMPTON circled the bow section at 0626 to determine if any persons were aboard it. Finding none, she proceeded to the stern section at 0632. At 0739 the fog and mist began to close in to 500 yards and by 0756 visibility was declared to be no more than 200 yards. NORTHAMPTON stayed with the San Jacinto until relieved by the Coast Guard at 1110. During-her stay with the tanker, NORTHAMPTON,s helo offered to remove the San Jacintois crewmembers from the ship but this offer was turned down. The tanker's skipper sent a note to NORTHAMPTON stating Please tell my owners that both sections are salvageable. That is why I requested tugs. Please pass word that all members are OK aboard-no injuries. We should appreciate our families being notified we are in no danger.
