The ship was begun as a cruiser in 1944, but at the end of World War II, work was halted with the ship half finished. Construction was resumed in 1948, with radical alterations, and the NORTHAMPTON was launched in January 1951. She was commissioned at the Boston Naval Shipyard, Charlestown, Massachusetts, on March 7, 1953. The NORTHAMPTON sailed to the Mediterranean in November 1954 as the flagship of Commander Striking Force Atlantic, and in 1957, she became his permanent home. Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, former Chief of Naval Operations was embarked in the NORTHAMPTON during the International Naval Review, held in Hampton Roads on June 13, 1957, in connection with the Jamestown 350th Anniversary Exposition. On April 13 and 14, 1962, the NORTHAMPTON sailed as flagship for the late President John F. Kennedy during his review of the Atlantic Fleet's Naval and Amphibious Forces. Since 1957, NORTHAMPTON's crew has visited South America, Scotland, England, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Canada, Bermuda, Netherlands, Antilles, Virgin Islands and Haiti. More recently, the NORTHAMPTON visited Newport, R.I.,' Cristobal, Panama, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Boston, Massachusetts, Charleston, S.C.g Fort Lauderdale, Florida and New York City. The NORTHAMPTON displaces 17,200 tons, measures 677 feet in length, has a beam of 70 feet and draws 26 feet of water. Four Babcock and Wilcox boilers, connected thfough reduction gears to propellers, provide steam to her four main engines. Her unique communications system would enable her to assume command of a major concentration of sea power at any time. When comparing NORTHAMPTON's firepower to other cruisers, it is often said she fights more with her brains than her muscles. The heavy cruiser's main battery was eliminated to provide additional staff, command and communication facilities. Her armament consists of four single-barrel, 5-inch, dual-purpose guns in mounts. These guns are fully auto- matic with an extremely high volume of fire. The NORTHAMPTON is outfitted to provide accommodations for a total of 1400 enlisted men and 220 officers. She is air-conditioned with the exception of engine rooms, boiler rooms and storerooms. Four hundred tons of refrigeration capacity are used in her cooling system, which maintains a constant below-deck temperature whether the ship cruises the Arctic Circle or on the Equator. The crewis comfort and convenience are enhanced by two barber shops, a lounge and library, two ship's stores, a cobbler shop, tailor shop and soda fountain. A daily 8-page newspaper is published at sea and a maga- zine, the finest afloat, is printed monthly, in port or at sea. The NORTHAMPTON's photographic laboratory and print shop are among the most versatile afloat: more completely equipped than many ashore. With combined effort they can produce charts, intelligence photo- graphs and educational material. The unusual exterior appearance of the NORTHAMPTON is a result of several unique features: Her hull is one deck higher than standard cruisers. She has two solid-sided towers instead of the usual masts. Her transmitting and receiving antennas are of special Kean-shaped design. The ship can easily be identified by a unique 126-foot, stick-type mast, the tallest afloat unsupported by shrouds or stays-mounted on her main deck. The NORTHAMPTON was designed for defense against atomic, bacteriological or chemical attack. She can be rigged as a closed envelopev in battle. Her smooth contours and painted steel weather decks combine with a salt water washdown system to flush any fallout contamination. -USD- We are the men of the second ship to hear the name NORTH AMPTON The first was a heavy cruiser VCCA commissioned and launched at uincy Massachusetts- on September 5 1929 Mrs C3.lV1IlpC0Olldg6 sponsored her and brolcefa bottle of mineral water across her bow. h On the first of December, 194f2, after many months of gallant wartime operations in theiPacific, she was hit and sunk by a Japanese torpedo off Guadalcanal on a night as black' as this page . . --iiml-hiisi. 13,--ff.-gn, :inn ,Ni , ,., , A. . But NORTHAMPTON had a rare opportunity to exhibit her capabil- ity at 0315 on the 26th of the month. She was approximately eight miles from Chesapeake Bay Lightship when a distress call was intercepted from the merchant tanker S.S. San Jacinto. An anode placed in one of the ship's gigantic tanks to prevent corrosion had fallen and the resultant spark triggered a ship-splitting explosion. Both sections of the tanker were adrift with the crew surviving on the stern section. NORTHAMPTON reversed her course and proceeded at 25 knots to conduct rescue operations at the scene off Chinco- teague, Virginia. The distressed tanker was sighted at 0603. At 0604 the shipas helicopter was launched. At 0609 the rescue and assistance detail was assembled. NORTHAMPTON circled the bow section at 0626 to determine if any persons were aboard it. Finding none, she proceeded to the stern section at 0632. At 0739 the fog and mist began to close in to 500 yards and by 0756 visibility was declared to be no more than 200 yards. NORTHAMPTON stayed with the San Jacinto until relieved by the Coast Guard at 1110. During-her stay with the tanker, NORTHAMPTON,s helo offered to remove the San Jacintois crewmembers from the ship but this offer was turned down. The tanker's skipper sent a note to NORTHAMPTON stating Please tell my owners that both sections are salvageable. That is why I requested tugs. Please pass word that all members are OK aboard-no injuries. We should appreciate our families being notified we are in no danger. . . . The alert performance of NORTHAMPTON in proceeding to the scene, assuming duties as on-scene command- er, and launching of the helicopter to render assistance was in keeping with the traditions of seamen the world over in going to the aid of their fellow mariners. I congratulate the officers and men of NORTHAMPTON on their demonstration of readiness and smart seamanshipi' - NORTHAlVIPTON,s Flotilla Commander, Rear Admiral Ben W. Sarver, USN. APRIL 1964 The first ten days of April were spent operating independently in the Virginia Capes and fueling from U.S.S. CALOOSAHATCHEE CAO-985 on April 7. She rested at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Ports- mouth, Virginia from April 10 to April 29 for replacement of her tropospherio scatter communications system antenna. A newer, im-' proved model was installed. The Norfolk Sub-Board of Inspection and Survey conducted their inspection during this time. The INSURV board declared the ship ready to play her part in battle and assigned a grade of Outstanding -a feat accomplished by few ships in this modern-day Navy. On April 26 in the last days of the shipyard period, an event rare in the course of a ship's history occurred. The commanding officer, Captain Edward E. Conrad, USN, was stricken with an illness which required immediate attention and hospitalization. The ship, scheduled to leave the shipyard on April 29 for a visit to New York City was without her first in command. ln a real vote of confidence for NORTHAlVlPTON's capable teamwork and leadership, the Navy's higher authorities chose the ship's executive officer, Commander Levio E. Zeni, USN, to command her during the illness of Captain Conrad. As NORTHAMPTON departed the shipyard on April 29, she passed the Naval hospital and rendered traditional passing honors to the stricken skipper, and proceeded to sea on her regularly assigned duties. MAY 1964 On May 3, NORTHAMPTON moored at the French Line piers of New York City for a four day visit to the bus- tling Worldis Fair City. The famous comedian, Jackie Glea- son, dedicated his May 6 television show to the men of NORTHAMPTON with an audience of some 300 of her men present. Captain Conrad was released from the hospital early in May and resumed command of NORTHAMPTON in New York City on May 5. Another visit to Norfolk, May 9 to May 18, was followed by a trip north -a one day visit to Newport, Rhode Island on May 22 for an inspection by Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Force, US. Atlantic Fleet, and subsequently, a three day recreational visit to Boston, Massachusetts. Any visit to Boston is of significance to NOBTHAMPTON's history. She was built at Quincy, Massachusetts. Her sponsor resides in the city for which the ship was named, Northampton, Massachusetts-not far from Boston. On May 25, Mrs. Victoria E. Lampron, the ship's sponsor and the mayor of Northampton, Massachusetts with the city council, Visited the ship. Also visiting were 175 students, teachers and officials of the Clarke School for the Deaf who have enjoyed a warm relationship with the NORTHAMPTON crew for ten years. On May 26 the Commanding Officer repaid the previous dayis calls in an unprecedented helicopter flight to Northampton, Massachusetts. The Mayor extended an official Welcome on the steps of the City Hall with numerous civic leaders and the high school band present. The Captain, together with city offi- cials and other representatives of the ship, toured the city, stopping at Clarke School for the Deaf to visit classrooms and chat with the students. I NORTHAMPTON returned to routine opera- tions in the Virginia Capes, visiting Norfolk occa- sionally. On J une 13, over 700 dependents and guests, including the Flotilla Commander, Rear Ad- miral Ben W. Sarver, USN, boarded the ship at Norfolk, Virginia for a dependen-tis cruise. The ship took her guests to sea for a day filled with demon- strations and exercises. On June 26, NORTHAMPTON traded her berth at Norfolk's Naval Station for one at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia. There, she underwent an ex-tensive overhaul-her first in five years.
