F ORE ORD This cruisebook pictorializes some of the activities in which NORTHAMPTON has participated during the last year. It is a record, if you will, of the things that we have done, of the men who did them, and of the human side of our operations as a command ship of the U.S Navy Though the record of our recent activities and achievements is now fresh in the mindsof you the officers and men of NORTHAMPTON, nevertheless this record will become less precise in your minds in the years ahead. This book, therefore, will months which you spent in NORTHAMPTON. It will freshen your memory of friendships made aboard ship ties which are closer than those which can be made in any other environment of humorous incidents, of trying days, of achievements of which you can be proud It will recall to you the important mission which we carried out in the cold War years of 1962 and 1963, the uniqueness of our tasks which did not permit us to roam far and wide as normal men-of-war do, but which required our presence in home waters They say that the impressions which live most vividly in the minds of Navy men are those which are received in our first ship. For many of you NORTHAMPTON has been your first ship, and for you this cruisebook will have a special value. To others it will fill the record of a certain segment of your naval service of which'you can be very proud. V 3 become more valuable to you in future years, for it will recall to you the years or 3 Q As your Commanding Officer during part of the time covered by the documenta- tion in this cruise book, I wish to inform you that I consider it a high honor to have been associated with you, to have had the opportunity to command the finestfman-of- war in the U.S. Navy. I salute each of you, the crew of NORTHAMPTON, for the outstanding way in which you have carried out your duties, for the service which you have given to the nation, and for your pride in service which has manifested itself in the high state of readiness achieved by NORTHAMPTON. I wish' you success and happiness in the years ahead whether they be spent in further naval service or in service to society in civilian life. I should like to leave the thought with you that the concept of service - service to God, country and our fellow man - is the most rewarding experience in life. E EDWARD E.
