Commander Albert P. Carpenter, USN, is a native of South Carolina, and entered the Navy in 1938 as an NROTC student at Georgia Institute of Technology. In 1940, he was appointed a mid- Shipman by the Secretary of the Navy and entered the Naval Academy in June of that year. Upon receiving his commission in 1943, he was assigned to the USS SIGSBEE CDD-5025 in the Pacific where he served in numerous aphibious and carrier strike operations until the end of World War II. Following the war, he was assigned to the fleet minesweepers USS CRUISE CAM-2151 and USS REVENGE CAM-1103, and in 1947 entered the Naval Post Graduate School for a course in command communications. Orders followed as Operations Officer aboard the presidential yacht USS WILLIAMSBURG, with addi- tional duty as White House Aide and Naval Communications Officer for the President. In 1950, he was ordered to duty as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Admiral W. M. Fechteler, Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. In 1951, Lieutenant Carpenter returned to the Mine Force as Commanding Officer, USS SAGE CAM-1115 and then reported aboard the battleship USS MISSISSIPPI as Navigation Officer. On being promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1954, he was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations where he was head of the fleet communications section. Returning to sea duty in 1956, Lieutenant Commander Car- penter served aboard the USS ALLEN M. SUMMER CDD-6925 as Executive Officer and Navigator and then aboard the heavy cruiser USS DES MOINES CCA-1345, flagship for Commander, SIXTH Fleet, as Operations Officer. Commander Carpenter subsequently reported to the staff of Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet where he was Assistant Officer in Charge, Fleet Operations Control Center. In March, 1961, he was assigned to the USS LOVVRY CDD-770D as Com- manding Officer. He held this position until reporting aboard NORTHAMPTON in March, 1963. Commander Carpenter is married to the former Miss Barbara Douglas Glover of Camden, South Carolina, They have two children: Douglas, 10, and Kate, 8. Their home is in Norfolk. 1
