JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
GLEN HEAD, NEW YORK

A MESSAGE FROM THE
PRINCIPAL OF OUR SCHOOL
This year has seen us move closer to our goal - to be part of the finest school
possible. We are blessed with splendid facilities to help us achieve this goal,
but the value of a school goes beyond our modern building, our spacious gym-
nasium, and our many audio -visual aids. Ultimately our success rests on our
ability to become worth-while citizens of out nation. The staff of the
SHORELINE has attempted to create for you some of the elements that go into
this process of building citizens, leavened by the humor that is typical ofthis
John E. French
We, the freshman class, would like to dedicate this yearbook to the backbone of the
junior high, Mr. Phlllp 'Bug' Bergovoy, our favorite member of the faculty. He is so
busy being coach of the soccer and basketball teams, we wonder how he managed to
find time for the Shoreline. In fact, Mr. B. left Student Council for the strenuous task
of faculty advisor on the yearbook.
"Where there's a will there's a way" and Mr. B. always seems to find one, usually
for the student's benefit. He has many ardent secret admirers from the ranks ofthe
junior high girls and is the idol of the boys - and who could blame them?
We could go on all day writing nice things about Mr. Bergovoy but, "CONFOUNDITl I "
we're running out of room.

The Junior High soccer team kicked off the 1958-59 season by chalking up a sensa-
tional unbeaten, unscored-upon record on their way to the North Shore League champion
ship, Headed by Captain Ricky Zimmermann and Assistant Captain Billy Hults, the
Little Vikings substituted spirit for size, Keystone of the eleven was the stout defense
with ace goalie Brian Scheu repelling every thrust, Ben Zukosky, Paul Mlinar, Milt
Butterworth, Bill Hults, Bob Johnson, Milan Arnost, Bill Lawrence, and Les Winter were
the key backs who made life easier for Scheu, The forward wall was anchored by such
as Don Van Deusen, Jerry Zimmermann, Ricky Zimmermann, Doug Koloski, Bob Reilly,
John Fox, George Leckie, and Stan Linclvall.
Meanwhile Bob Kock was touring the hills and dales for Coach Don Thompson's
Cross-Country team. Although only a freshman, Bob was one of the top five harriers on
the high school team. Several other freshman boys such as Ronnie Rant, Bob Sofield,
Bob Archer, Jim Patton, Steve Pfister, Steve Nichols, Ted Montfort, and Pete Lauber
bolstered the J, V. football team, contributing to their excellent record,
The winter season brought the basketball and wrestling teams into action, and both
units enjoyed considerable success, The grapplers had a 5-2 record on their way to sec-
ond place in their league. Coach Nicco1ino's men were paced by Steve Pfister, Bill and
Bob Reinhardt, Carmen Della Ratta, Pete Lauber, Paul Mlinar, Moose Della Ratta, and
Steve Nichols, Still another freshman wrestler, Ricky Zimmermann, was first string
varsity 106 pounder, Ricky, who weighed only 90 pounds, rang up an impressive record,
and may dominate his class next year, George Leckie and Neal Schneider also wrestled
well for the varsity and J, V,
The basketeers, known as the Mighty Midgets because they were so much shorter
than their opponents, won eight of their last nine games to finish the season with a 10-5
record and second place in their league, They turned in two mighty upsets during the
season, reversing a 51-37 loss to Roslyn's timber-toppers in a return game, and pinning
the only league loss on an excellent Manhasset aggregation. The hoopsters were led by
Captain Billy Hults, Assistant Captain Brian Sullivan, high scorer Bobby Lloyd, Bob So-
field, Bud Sofield, John Fox, Jim Patton, Bob Johnson, and John McQuillan, Sweetest
victory of the season was their 62-51 verdict over the Faculty five, the first time that
the Junior High team has ever beaten the Faculty,
Among other harbingers of spring we find the baseball and track teams. Mr. Mc-
Mullen's nine presents a formidable array of ta lent in pursuit of the league crown, Vet-
eran backstop Carmen Della Ratta will don the mask and chest protector to receive the
pitches of such moundsmen as Bobby Lloyd, Bob Sofield, Brian Sullivan, Bobby Reilly,
Dave Johnson, Alan Kramer, and Bobby Conlin, The infield will feature Willy Smith,
Don Van Deusen, Doug Koloski, Bobby Johnson, and Bud Sofield, while Jim Parton,
Steve Pfister, and one of the spare pitchers will patrol the outer gardens,
Mr, Clark's track team has abalanced array which promises to do very well in com-
petition, Points are expected from Bob Kock in the half mile, Pete Nichols in the pole
vault, Ronnie Rant and John Collins in the sprints, John Fox in the high jump, Ben Zu-
kosky and Les Winter in the shot put, Phil Catapano in the broad jump, and also from the

This year Girls' Sports were divided into three seasons: fall, winter, and spring. Each sea-
son's sports were learned in the school gym classes, then practiced and perfected in the after-
school sports program.
Fall's main sports were ones which were played in the field. The seventh and eighth graders
played soccer, while the freshmen participated in a new sport, field hockey. Field hocky is
similar to soccer, except that a hockey stick and a hard white ball are used instead of the pneu-
matic soccer ball.
Girls came out in multitudes for the winter sports which included volleyball and basketball.
Both sports were open to all Junior High School girls. Teams were chosen for intramural games.
They had lots of fun, but varying degrees of success.
Many new spring sports were introduced, utilizing much new equipment. Archery, tennis,
softball, and badminton were played. More girls, as always, went out for softball, which was
played intramurally. Archery, introduced this year, brought out the "Robin Hood" in quite a
few girls. Tennis and its cousin, badminton, were also well liked.
We are very thankful for the excellent facilities that we have for our use and for the great
coaches to help us learn our skills. Thanks to you, Miss Maple and Mrs. Trauth, we had fun
and learned many new skills as well.
GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
The Junior High Girls'Athletic Association is an organization of Junior High Girls who par-
ticipate in at least one sport per year. It was organized this year to unite all girls interested in
developing their skills and sportsmanship through competition.
The present officers of the organization are Connie Griffin, President: Jeanne Li, Vice
Presidentg Jane Whitlock, Secretary. In addition to these officers, almost two hundred girls are
members of the Girls' Athletic Association.
Girls collect points for participation in sports held after school. These points are totaled at
the end of the year for awards. At the end of the three years in Junior High School, if a girl
has accumulated a total of 240 points, she will receive the school letter.
STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS
FUTURE TEACHERS CLUB
The main goal of the Junior High Future Teachers Club, under the
supervision of Miss Thomas, is to give the members an idea of what the
teaching profession holds in store for them. To accomplish this goal
some of the members have been helping in the Kissam Lane School.
Those who have no free periods help in one of their own classes.
The Junior Thespians is made up of a group of Junior High students
who are interested in all aspects of the theater. The club gave two
plays this year, both of which were very successful. They also have
had a guest speaker, seen a Broadway play, "The Pleasure of His
Company, " and made a field trip to Hofstra College to inspect their
theatrical facilities. The group was organized by Mr. Harry Thomp-
son who is doing an excellent job in administering the c1ub's activities.
In this, the first year of the Junior High Photography Club, the
school has supplied the club with the finest equipment possible. Next
year the club hopes to expand to include both the Junior High and the

The Spanish Club is composed of students taking their first year
Spanish. It is under the guidance of Mrs. Dorothea Comport.
The club has learned much about the Latin American Countries
from field trips, guest speakers, and colorful slides and films. This is
a club that is well worth belonging to.
The Home Economics Club, under the supervision of Miss Marie
Higgins, has performed many services this year. They baked Christ-
mas cookies and gave them to St. Francis Home and the Old Folks
Home, and they also made refreshments for the judges at the North
Shore High School Science Fair. They have had several guest speakers
this year. Each person works on a project which interests her in the
field of cooking or sewing.
