1971 was a year of progress. The year 1971 brought many changes to North Putnam. It was not the first year at a new school. It was the second year--a year of change, of progress. The student council spent half of the school year preparing a modified dress code to be presented to the school board for its approval or disapproval. The modified dress code stressed pant suit apparel for girls and certain changes for boys' hair styles. Blue Jean and Tennis Shoe day allowed the girls to wear slacks or blue jeans for a school day. The school year saw accident-prone pupils on crutches, in casts, and in all sorts of braces. Some- times the building looked more like a hospital ward than a-school. North Putnam witnessed its first homecoming this year. Sherri Stoker became the first homecoming queen. Two new clubs were organized this year--the Future Teachers' Association and the Industrial Arts Club. A boys' pep block was organized to help support Qur team. Colorful tops added to the spirit of the girl's pep block. A shuttle bus was considered for returning stu- dents home after extracurricular activities in the evening. 1970-71 saw the loss of commimity rivalry in school, more communication between the student body and the faculty and administration, and a set- tled-in feeling at North Putnam. Art students decorated windows. The bookmobile librarian checked out many interest- ing books to NP students this year.

CtlV1tlCS got the students involved. Many extracurricular activities created interest for students outside of their academic requirements. School spirit was spurred on by colorful posters and drawings done by the cheerleaders and members of the pep club. Lights burned both early and late at North Put- nam. With so many basketball teams some teams had to practice before school started in the morn- ings. Students rehearsing for the fall and spring plays returned to school in the evenings to practice songs, dances, or lines. Recreational swimming was open to classes and clubs during the evening. Splash time provided work as well as relaxation for the members of North Put- nam's first swim team. North Putnam really got into the swim of things this year as clubs visited art and science museums, the state legislature, and took other interesting field trips.
