The Putnam County Tuberculosis them a TB test. This was a very valuable Association was the benefactor. The Putnam County bookmgbile Came CO'Lll.d1'1't be fO'l1I1d at N'OI'th P'l1TII1El.I'f1'S ll' to North Putnam Several times a month, brary. Students were often called from Students checked out books which C12-SS to return Overdue 'DOORS- The cokeman was a familiar sight as he delivered cans of that refreshing drink. Several times during the year the coke room was closed due to litterbugs. 9 Teacher Mr. Gibson even spent time attending a rehearsal of Miracle Worker. Convocations at North Putnam ranged from a NASA demonstration to music from the band at Christmas. Our school nurse, Mrs. Bee, helped remove something from the eye of eighth grader Cathy Carter. 1971 was a year of progress. The year 1971 brought many changes to North Putnam. It was not the first year at a new school. It was the second year--a year of change, of progress. The student council spent half of the school year preparing a modified dress code to be presented to the school board for its approval or disapproval. The modified dress code stressed pant suit apparel for girls and certain changes for boys' hair styles. Blue Jean and Tennis Shoe day allowed the girls to wear slacks or blue jeans for a school day. The school year saw accident-prone pupils on crutches, in casts, and in all sorts of braces. Some- times the building looked more like a hospital ward than a-school. North Putnam witnessed its first homecoming this year. Sherri Stoker became the first homecoming queen. Two new clubs were organized this year--the Future Teachers' Association and the Industrial Arts Club. A boys' pep block was organized to help support Qur team. Colorful tops added to the spirit of the girl's pep block. A shuttle bus was considered for returning stu- dents home after extracurricular activities in the evening. 1970-71 saw the loss of commimity rivalry in school, more communication between the student body and the faculty and administration, and a set- tled-in feeling at North Putnam. Art students decorated windows. The bookmobile librarian checked out many interest- ing books to NP students this year. 5 S 31 3 CtlV1tlCS got the students involved. Many extracurricular activities created interest for students outside of their academic requirements. School spirit was spurred on by colorful posters and drawings done by the cheerleaders and members of the pep club. Lights burned both early and late at North Put- nam. With so many basketball teams some teams had to practice before school started in the morn- ings. Students rehearsing for the fall and spring plays returned to school in the evenings to practice songs, dances, or lines. Recreational swimming was open to classes and clubs during the evening. Splash time provided work as well as relaxation for the members of North Put- nam's first swim team. North Putnam really got into the swim of things this year as clubs visited art and science museums, the state legislature, and took other interesting field trips. The portrait of Mary and the baby jesus portrayed the true meaning of the celebration of Christmas time. I4 David Webber enjoyed the idea of crowning the 1970 queen of the Christmas Ball, Chris Stoker. Steve Goff and Joyce Hill danced the evening away. Cinderella danced at the Christmas Ball. Every couple at the Christmas Ball was Cinderella and Prince Charming in a make-believe world of glitter and tinsel decorations. Indeed, royalty was present at the 1970 Christmas Ball as Chris Stoker wore the crown of queen and Greg Richard was king. Christmas Ball has seemed to have become a tra- ditional event at which girls look their most glam- ourous in formal gowns and special hair styles. The jitterbug, the twist, and the hully-gully may have gone out, but the tradition of stepping on your partner's toes was still in at the Christmas dance. Since the couples were in formal attire, the danc- ing seemed to be at a slower pace. Couples who had never danced to anything but hard rock found them- selves fascinated with the antiquated custom of dancing close to each other. The 1970 Christmas Ball at North Putnam added a touch of magic to the already exciting Christmas season. f ix? 1 i V' X W X f y'f, X N Rafi X xkxffff X XX' ' K., Wisdom lights the road of life W' f A ,, , wfmam 'y N 4 1 KM WYQ3? Renovation of the superintendent's office made a more pleasant atmosphere for school board meetings. We had school leaders. The chief power of a school system's administra- tion began with the school board and worked its Way down through the superintendent to the principals of a school building. These administrators managed money, guided students, and listened to teachers. The school board approved a new dress code set up by the students at North Putnam and also ran a survey of students' and parents' opinions of a shuttle bus system for extracurricular activities. Paving the school parking lot was discussed. Many school patrons, students, and teachers felt that a paved parking lot would be a great improve- ment for North Putnam. Administration attempted to solve the problems of a growing school corpora- tion. Air Force, Navy, Marine, and Army recruiting of- ficers told seniors about service careers. I8 E, Mr, Evens was boys' guidance counselor. l We advlsed. Our main concern in the guidance department was to try to ease some problems that plague teach- ers and students alike, Some of the areas of concern to students seemed to be in college applications and preparations, adjustments needed by students to various curricula, and class scheduling problems, To improve communication at all levels, a coun selor referral system was instituted this year and we felt because of it, better understanding was de- veloped for all involved. Counseling student problems was our main con- cern and at times conferences with parents were fruitful. In addition to counseling, many hours were involved with paper work and various details. The guidance department gave a helping hand to all who desired it. Mrs. Greeson Mr, Miller and Mrs, Greeson discussed school Silkscreening was one process learned in shop class. Rick Daniels used an electric saw while Tony Riggen tried the oscilloscope, Kenny I-Iouser did cross-cutting. Mr. Steward Mr. Hazlett We were builders. The bang of a hammer, the rasping of a file, the smell of oil, and the purring of a motor all meant just one thing at North Putnam--the industrial art wing, Industrial art classes provided the students an opportunity to learn to develop and print film in the school's darkroom, Some of the pictures were used in this year's annual, Industrial art courses put the students on the road to becoming professionals in fields such as drafting, woodworking, mechanical engineering, and radio technology. Many of these skills would be utilized in the future, 21 Mrs, L, Myers Mrs, D, Myers Mrs. Stalker Mr. Thomas Whatis English. The land of books with magic words to take us anywhere in the world--this was English, We strolled through the Catskills with Rip Van Winkle, held back tears at the death of Romeo and Juliet, and counted the wounds that Julius Caesar had. Although many students disliked English, they sometimes failed to realize how frequently they used this implement, Reading lunch menus, asking for a library pass, writing a note to a boyfriend--this was English. English classes often took voyages to find sunken treasure--unknown vocabulary words, spelling skills and correct grammar. The older students digested facts to be assimilated into term papers or themes while the younger school population gave examples of onomatopoeia, THIS was English, Unfortunately students didn't always line up as wil- lingly for English class as they did at lunch, ,Cimcricks R f I A ' 'XX ii Varoopnm - mr 'X III-HK mucus I now-wow' ilil-l? Mr. Bonar agreed to help sponsor a group who would like to visit the land of the sombrero and siesta. The thoughts of bull-fights, pyramids, ta- males, and tacos enticed students to pack their lug- gage and head for the southern border, Latin students were concerned with Latin con- vention and the junior Classical League banquet. This year JCL members were able to wear their togas, stolas, and sandals to school the day of the banquet. Did the students find Latin to be dead? No, Latin was a living language in the medical and scientific professions, f Students found the sidewalk in an icy condition as they cautiously made their way to buses, , . As the junior high learned of pre-American his- tory of Columbus, the Spanish Armada, and Ma- gellan, the senior high was kept busy studying the history of the world. The junior high history classe: had the opportunity of visiting the Museum of Sci- ence and lndustry and Field's Museum on a Chicagc field trip. Mrs. Hazlett We had problems. Yes, we had problems at North Putnam--general math, algebra, geometry, and 11-igonometry prob- lems. This year students didn't have any answers from last year in their books, because there were new math books. Several math pupils took the National Math- ematics Test, and most scored in the fiftieth per- centile. Even though recent times has emphasized mod- ern math, traditional arithmetic was used constantly by everyone at North Putnam. Teachers used it to average grades, home economics students measured hems, and everyone estimated how much time was left in the school year. Bus drivers often had difficulties with their buses, but they always managed to deliver their student riders to school. Not only did the bus drivers shuttle students back and fordu from home to school, but they also acted as chauffeurs to ball games, G.A.A, events, and all sorts of field trips. Because of the volume of lunches prepared at school and the limited time element involved, it was not always possible to fix everything just the way Mother did. The cooks at North Putnam pre- pared an average of 500-600 meals daily. This was a large amount of food to get ready and to clean up after in just six hours. They did a good job! Mrs, Bee, the school nurse, issued band-aids, calmed ill students, and kept the Candy Stripers busy throughout the year. These interested and eager students were not satisfied to limit their activities to researching in- formation about rocketry, These boys sent for kits and built their own rockets and missiles. The boys owned thirty to thirty-five rockets that they purchased with their own money. They used a solid propellant fa powdered zinc and sulfurj. The club owned one large rocket--a Saturn. One rocket even had its own camera which took aerial photographs. The Rocket Club sometimes met after school and Saturdays to launch their rockets and missiles, Since the altitude of some of these rockets reached from 600 to 2500 feet, needless to say, some were lost in the atmosphere, The North Putnam band this year was made up of one hundred eight marching Cougars who played at football games, convos, concerts, and band contests, They always presented a good show, The band marched. North Putnam's band was active this year in bringing several touring musical groups to the school. An Indiana State University orchestra group demonstrated for band students various types of music, including the minuet and modern rock. The Evansville All-City Band and Orchestra was enjoyed at a public concert and at a student convo. During the Evansville band's one night stay, North Putnam students hospitably opened their homes to the Evansville students, A variety show was also sponsored this year by the North Putnam band. Local talent, such as folk singers and dance bands, participated in this musical show. Mr, John Wilson and Mr. David Gjesvold deserved thanks for their efforts. 42 The North Putnam majorettes were QSEATEDJ Pam Allen, Judy Fordice, Jeanna Clodfelter. The Pep Band, Stage Band, and Swing Choir participated in many extracurricular events. The Pep Band, directed by Mr. Wilson, kept very busy being super boosters of North Putnam's Cougar basketball team. They also fired up spirit at student pep sessions. The Stage Band, led by Mr. Gjesvold, played for student dances. It also participated in the state stage band contest at Ben Davis High School. North Put- nam's Stage Band won first place. The Swing Choir, sponsored by Mrs. Zenor, sang for clubs and their activities, school affairs, and other organizations. Practices were held after school. These three activities took up much time and effort on the part of teachers and students involved. Much practice went into perfecting the sound of each group. Undoubtedly the students who took part learned a great deal about music and its niche in modern culture. The Math Club, sponsored by jim Myers, instilled and promoted interest in mathematics beyond the scope of the classroom. This year several lectures were given on the his- tory of mathematics, Recreational math was delved into as members worked mathematical puzzles and novelty games, Experiments in probability were conducted dur- ing Math Club meetings, This club showed students the practical sides of the world of math and also the entertaining facets of it, 48 Eighty North Putnam students starred in the spring musical OLIVER, Mike Reed was cast in the lead, Oliver fMike Reedj was locked in a coffin to be taught a lesson. Letters from the directors to the cast often seemed discouraging to the students involved in one of North Putnam's plays, but magically they seemed to pull themselves together after reading such a note. They became alive and presented the audience a realistic portrayal of Helen Keller's childhood in MIRACLE WORKER for their fall production. Stage presence--besides the upstage foot, up- stage gesture, and cheating to the audience, the good actor is a member of an ensemble. He con- tributes to' a total effort. In amateur theatre his energy and enthusiasm completely envelope his audience, Surely the cast of the musical OLIVER worked as a team to present the plight of the orphaned boy Oliver Twist, From workhouse to thieves' den A Oliver's tragedy deepened until he was rescued by a wealthy gentleman and one of the thieves' girl friends. Encores were in order for the North Putnam Thespian troupe this year. 49 Mr. Bonar sponsored North Putnam's Spani This was a little bit of Spain at . . TI-IE PEP BLOCK The pep block this year was literally beside it- self, that is there were two pep blocks--the girls' block and the boys' block. Although the boys' pep block was not created until late in the season, Ron Proctor and Mike Al- derson, the block organizers, did a fantastic job of putting the block in order for the Cloverdale game and for the tourney. The girls' block did a great cheering job through- out the season. They backed the varsity Cougars to many victories in the 1970-1971 season. The girls' new uniforms this year were blue with orange trim while the boy's uniforms were tie-dyed orange and blue. Pep Club members yelled their hearts out on the way to a Cougar victory at sectional time. Class posters sparked enthusiasm and school spirit during the basketball season, especially during the sectional and regional. Approximately eighty junior high students composed the junior Historical Club at North Putnam. History opened up new Worlds. History was often learned first-hand by the Junior and Senior Historical Societies. The Junior Historical Society visited Vincennes and New Harmony. The George Rogers Clark Memorial was seen and the ex- periment in communal living at New Harmony was investigated. Claudia Tracy, a member of the Senior Histor- ical Society, was elected to a state office. The project for the junior Historical Society state convention was entitled Our Astronauts. Pupils constructed facsimiles of rockets, researched the kind of foods eaten in space, and delved into all phases of space travel. Boys' intramural sports were held again this year, Basketball, of course, was the featured sport. There were ninety high school participants, and this year junior high boys could also become active in the intramural program, Thirty junior high students played intramural basketball. Int:ramura1 sports gave boys who played on a high school basketball team to enjoy this Hoosier sport. The Zoners team won first place in high school intramurals. The Aminals conquered second place. Other bizarre names appeared as team titles, such as the River Rats and the Pacers. This was the second year for North Putnam to have such a program, but surely not its last. Even though the uniforms were not as flashy nor were there attractive cheerleaders to arouse crowd spirit, there was still enthusiasm from the partici- pants themselves and the ir parents. The intramural program spelled fun, The winning intramural team was fl, to r.j Ron Porter, Mark Keyt, David Miller, Ed Shuck, Greg Richard, Ted McGaughey, Marley Price, and jay Unger, 78 Donetta Ardelean passed off to Darlene Price against the Greencastle basketball team. The NPI-IS cheerleaders were very active this year. Besides spending time after school for prac- ticing cheers, the yell leaders also had Pep Club meetings to attend after school hours. Special ef- forts were used by the pep block at Christmas time as flashlights were used for special numbers. With five squads of cheerleaders in junior and senior high many, many letters were needed to ornament the sweaters of the girls. Miss Daseler, cheerleader sponsor, kindly made all of the letters and other designs needed. To earn money for the Pep Club to purchase shirts alike, students sold Cougar license plates. The cheerleaders took part in many exciting hours of basketball as they boosted the Cougars to first place at the Holiday Tourney and the Putnam County sectional. e There are only a few steps until the end o -- n -f37:'L .- 4- eg. gg f nf T? n , 2:5 f W Q WMM 3 DERCLASS jean Adamson ,ez i. The eighth grade suffered between the limbo of seventh grade and freshmen. The west corridor was flooded by the eighth graders trying to get into their lockers for books, since this class had the distinction of being the largest class at North Put- nam. They were rambunctious, energetic, and eager. They no longer were at the bottom rung of the stu- dent membership, but it would be next fall before they would be totally integrated into the full ac- tivities of high school at North Putnam. Being a seventh grader feels like being a first grader at North Putnam, Everybody is grades higher than I am. When I came to the North Putnam High School, I thought it was a big, nice, clean school. My first impression of North Putnam was that I didn't know where I was supposed to go. The lockers were too little. When you're a seventh grader, you're on the way to being a senior. l thought North Putnam was a much bigger school and had better things to offer. North Putnam was a big school with harder work and more responsibilities for the seventh grade class. It meant getting up earlier, getting to class on time, working a difficult locker combination, hav- ing a short lunch hour, and concentrating on becom- - f - ing an eighth grader. There were many fans who attended last year's football games, among them were many seventh graders. The seventh graders were helped through their first year at North Put by their class officers who were: QSTANDINGQ Mike Bullerdick, Drenda Mattingly, and Neil Miles.
