The sand painting depicted on this year's Hoofbeats cover represents a Navajo wish for health, wealth, and happiness. The corn symbol used in the design represents abundance or wealth. Corn is essential in the life of the Indians, for it is one of their staple foods. The drawing of the cloud symbolizes rain, which is important to the desert- dwelling lndian, who depends on rain to produce his food. The symbol of the sun is also important to the Indian as a source of nourishment for the crops on which his livelihood depends. Health, wealth, and happi- ness-not only is that the wish expressed in the cover design, but it is also our wish to you for the years to come. May you succeed in lite and achieve everything you undertake.
