Every night, over four hundred residents file in, fill their trays and sit down for an hour and a half of social intercourse. Here, after the day's classes and before the night's classes, you can sit for a while, watch the people comeand go, talk with the good friends, listen, laugh, sing, and -- though not too often -- think. It's a release valve. Whatever is bugging you, you can always take it out on the food.

During the day, drifters with time to kill between classes chew absently on hamburgers and fries, while the North Branch and an occasional oil slick float by. When it gets dark, the drifters aren't waiting for time to pass. They want it to linger. Sometimes a scattered crowd, sometimes a thundering horde converges on the Cranny's fluorescent window.
