For someone who comes to Chicago for the first time, the El can be a frightening thing. It winds its way through the city's alleys, casting shadows, creating ob- structions. One can't get his bearings amidst the blank faces and the unfamil- iar names of the identical stations. And the dark and dirty stairways and station houses, the peeling of the paint, the silent waiting on the platforms, all speak of the decay of the City. But after a while you realize that those silent riders are people too. And then the El be- comes a little less of a monster. Some- times, late at night, you get on the EI downtown, and you think about Kim- ball, end of the line, and you feel like you're almost home.
