It winds its way through the city's alleys, casting shadows, creating ob- structions. One can't get his bearings amidst the blank faces and the unfamil- iar names of the identical stations. And the dark and dirty stairways and station houses, the peeling of the paint, the silent waiting on the platforms, all speak of the decay of the City. But after a while you realize that those silent riders are people too. And then the El be- comes a little less of a monster. Some- times, late at night, you get on the EI downtown, and you think about "Kim- ball, end of the line," and you feel like you're almost home. ' -rw 41-.Q I. V ff:- L. ,,w,,,m. Every night, over four hundred "residents" file in, fill their trays and sit down for an hour and a half of social intercourse. Here, after the day's classes and before the night's classes, you can sit for a while, watch the people comeand go, talk with the good friends, listen, laugh, sing, and -- though not too often -- think. It's a release valve. Whatever is bugging you, you can always take it out on the food. During the day, drifters with time to kill between classes chew absently on hamburgers and fries, while the North Branch and an occasional oil slick float by. When it gets dark, the drifters aren't waiting for time to pass. They want it to linger. Sometimes a scattered crowd, sometimes a thundering horde converges on the Cranny's fluorescent window. Some stay only as. long as it takes to fry a hamburger, some stay all evening. It happens there every day and night. You look to other places for the big times. Q 1971 United Feature Syndicate, Inc. It wasn't too bad though. Most of the chariots fell apart during the Grand Car-roll, part of the festivities lthe Crush Car-rolll was towed away because someone thoughtit was junk, the crepe paper bled, and only the diehards could bear the feel and smell of wet wool all the way through to the end of our loss lonce morel to Carroll. But we got C.P. into a tub for the race, the rain was a good excuse to put your arm around her, the Thorburn-Stepan concerts were packed to the walls for two performances, and Miss Physical Plant stole nearly as many hearts as Peggy did. Just barely. At least someone is still more interested in the exchange of ideas than in conference standings. MAO TSE-TUNG, I PRESUME? "Watching China from Hong Kong is like scratching an itch without taking your shoe off." --Dr. Harald Jacobson Add to Symposium one more. The death of the Lecture-Artist Series stung someone's conscience, the end result being a long title: The Distinguished Visiting Alumni Scholars Program. Dr. Harald Jacobson, former head of the Desk of Asian Communist Affairs in the State Department, partici- pated in a weekend of seminars. The discussions centered on two particular areas--the world as viewed from Peking, and the Peoples' Republic of China as viewed from the United States. Because of Dr. Jacobson's visit, it was easier to understand why after twenty-three years of Cold War politics the United State finally took its shoe off and scratched the itch. But there is only QE candidate at North Park, and he is a Swede!" When the hoopla slackened off and things got serious, two candidates faced each other: Heintzelmanand Liljegren. And later Heintzelman and Lavieri were elected, which may have nothing to do with the fact that they weren't Swedes. The Board of Directors spent an entire day on campus, talking with students, both in large open discussions and in smaller conversations with specific student organizations. lt was the first such encounter on record. The Domestic Affairs Commission gathered hundreds of boxes of clothes from students and Chicago area churches lsadly, no Covenant congregations respondedl. The clothes were sent to Chinle, Arizona and distributed there among Navajo Indians by a former North Parker. Students for a Live- able World, North Park's eco-freaks campaigned for fewer people, breathable air, clean water, and less garbage lin the form of recyclable bottles and cansl. Last, and by no means least, the Social Ser- vices Commission continued its far-reaching tutoring programs, overcame the major setback of a fire in its storefront center, and sponsored a Saturday morning basketball league for neighborhood kids. Outward Bound projected as far as Big Bend National Park, Texas, and Washington, D.C. this year. One group collected scorpions and rattlesnakes, the other watched the wheels of gov- ernment grinding on--if in fact they moved at all. Others, staying closer to base, communed with the ghost of Frank Lloyd Wright or helped deliver the babies of Chicago's poor. Every year the same thing comes across: the resources are all there--you only have to dig them up and use them. N ex N X 5- S UN TUUR There's an aspect of community that one can't understand until he's been on a tour. For a week or two or nine, you and a bus- load of musicians are in a world of your own. This year, the Choir hit New England, the Wind Ensemble saw the Midwest, the Glee Clubs travelled among the Great Lakes, and Gospel Teams sang just about everywhere be- tween Pennsylvania and California. s . It is with great pride that we present: OFFICIAL RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR FRISBEE FOOTBALL The game of Frisbee Football, a contest of strategy, deception, skill and much blood, must be played according to the following rules if it is to be declared official, although alterations or substitutions may be made if circumstances require them. Otherwise, the game may be un- offically declared official. 1. The teams shall consist of not more than five and not less than five players. Of course, this depends on the number of players available. 2. The field shall be of a curvature, as the bite from a doughnut, with a sizeable knoll in the center. Goal lines must not, under any circum- stances, be parallel. 3. Play will consist of a passing game, running from scrimmage only as a last resort, when all other means of moving the Frisbee have failed. When a player is forced to run, he will be called a cheat, and play will continue. 4. Beginning of play is indicated by tapping the Frisbee to the ground three times. If the tapping can be done surreptitiously, it is to your advantage, for you may be able to score before the other team realizes you have begun to play. 5. You must pass beyond the line of scrimmage, unless you wish to pass to a player behind the line of scrimmage. 6. The team that completes three out of four passes gets another first down. If they fail to do this, the opposition is free to accept or reject possession of the Frisbee.: 7. Sound Frisbee strategy makes use of the wind, the trees, or whatever other natural obstacle is available to your advantage. 8. To strike, abuse, attack, or jump on an opposing player who is in pain is usually not allowed. When such pain is inflicted, the inflicting team will chant, "Pain is good," or "No gain without pain," to add to the discomfort of the afflicted. 9. The team who continually exceeds in deception and craftiness will usually be declared the winner, providing that this team has also been able to gain the most points. 10. Substitutions may be made only in case of injury, exhaustion, mental breakdown, or hives. 89 ln the following few pages we present several of the groups which people join in order to get up'the nerve to do several things they would never dare do by themselves. ww Peggy Erickson, Sue Black, Pam Johnson, Peggy Bell, Marta Mitchell. .I n "' l i Amvome? wma- ! Here are four North Parkers you know all about. You know the Covie, that close- minded evangelist who spends all his time in Bible studies, prayer groups, or singing in a gospel team. You know the Black, who wants to be separate and always gets special treatment--someone to cheer from the stands but ig- nore on the street. You know the Jock, loud and obnoxious, who talks of nothing but sports, is drunk at a party every weekend, and comes to school only to play ball. And you know the long-haired, indifferent Freak, who spends most of his time in his room smoking dope and listening to wall-shaking rock music. What's more, since you know all about these guys you don't have to listen to what they have to say--unless you happen to agree with them. And of course you don't have to love them. You can just chalk up North Park's problems to one or two of them and go about your busi- ness as usual. lt's nice and simple. But it's all wrong because you really don't know them. -os? ,fy x,gwa+L7ieN' v 'f l 4' Pm -. .slits ' 4 .Qs '- ve' :"M i. b. For all you know, that Covie isn't as closed-minded as you have taught yourself to believe, but puts his faith to work every after- noon playing basketball with inner city kids. For all you know, that Black is part of a black student association not to set himself apart, but to educate a group of peers whose skin and experience happen to be different from his own. For all you know, that Jock finds more gratification in teaching a child to crawl than in going to parties, and came to North Park primarily to go to school and then to play ball. And for all you know, that Freak has done a lot more serious thinking than most of us, and takes the time to talk with people who are avoided by others. The point is, you don't know. And most other people don't either. Maybe it's time to look beyond a label or a stereotype and see each other as people with a common experience. Give the other guy the benefit of the doubt and you'll discover he isn't as different as you thought. Together we can do it. Alone we can't. So we went all the way to Asia to protect them from the Communists. And the South Vietnamese will never forget what America has done. Heres a small list of our achievements in Vietnam: 0 We've killed more Vietnamese civilians in the last six months than the Communists have in 16 years. 0 We've killed - and are still killing -so many children, that one out of two doesn't live past the age of five. 0 We've dropped the equivalent of ZW Hiroshimas on Vietnam every week. 0 We've destroyed so many villages, 6,000,000 South Vietnamese are refugees in their own land, living in conditions more horrible than any slum in the U.S. 0 We've destroyed 3570 of their forests. 0 We've destroyed half a million acres of their crops- enough to feed 600,000 people. 0 We've supported 300,000 Vietnamese prostitutes. 0 We've exposed thousands of our men to a new habit -drugs. 440,000 to 50,000 veterans have already returned as addicts, according to a report in The New York Times.l v We've fathered thousands of illegitimate children, without providing for them. 0 We've literally destroyed a proud centuries-old culture. Haven 'Z we done enough ? Have we the moral right to destroy a country in order to "save" it? And is it worth the more than 300,000 dead or wounded Americans we've lost in Vietnam? We think not. If you agree, send the message below to your Congressman. Only Congress can cut the purse strings that keep this war going.
