Adm. 8t Curriculum Cooperation Key to Well-Planned Curriculum Many opportunities are given North students to prepare them- selves for almost any future they plan. Much study and planning go into forming a curriculum in which every student can find something to fit his needs. English is divided into semester courses. A semester each of com- position, American, and British lit- erature is required. Free to choose from about thirty courses, the stu- dent has one elective each year. College-bound students find mathematics courses available for them, while the non-college student can profit from general or business math, or such courses as trade math. Biology is required of all soph- omores, with chemistry and physics being offered. Three languages, Latin, French, and Spanish, are al- so offered. World history, US his- tory, and sociology are offered. Physical education, driver educa- tion, and orientation are required in the sophomore year. In the field of fine arts, music and art are offered. Music takes the form of chorus, band, and orches- tra. Beginners' art, as well as ad- vanced art courses, is offered. Such courses as typing, short- hand, secretarial practice, busi- ness machines, keypunch, com- puter, and bookkeeping prepare many students for work after grad- uation with no further training. ln distributive education and ICT, students learn about the business and industrial world and get on- the-job training as well. Family life courses, clothing and foods, child care, health occupations, auto me- chanics, horticulture, agriculture, cosmetology, industrial arts, and mechanical drawing classes offer a variety of means to prepare one- self for work, college, or personal gratification. For those who wish to enroll, North's AFJROTC offers a chance to study air space education, learn about the military, and develop leadership abilities. Two special education classes take care of selected students. Three counselors offer guidance for all students, college bound or otherwise. Almost every student uses the facilities of this depart- ment. Also used extensively is a well-planned library. An efficiently run cafeteria is also provided. For the young man or woman who is really interested in learning, there is no lack of courses to help him. Everyone works together to give as many opportunities as possible for the development of the student. Student teachers from Davidson College this year were Mr. Lester Strong, Mrs. Frances Mawhinney, Mr. Whit Ayers, and Mr. Rod Cook. 1lMr. Ronald Walls served as an intern counselor this year. 2lMrs. Janice Baldwin worked as attend- ance counselor during the fall. 3lAt a farewell party given for him, Mr. Ayers received a trophy from the class. He seems to think there is something in it
