Mosf of fhe bauxife found in our won- derful sfafe is mined from open pil' mines near Bauxife, Arkansas, and in surrounding areas. Manganese, fo be used in fhe manufacfure of hard sfeel, is found in Independence Counfy. Second only fo soil and wafer in value are 'fhe abundanf and luxurianf foresfs fhaf cover nearly fhree-fiffhs of fhis Land of Opporfun- i'l'y. Confained in fhese foresfs are more fhan fwo hundred kinds of frees, sixfy of which are presenfly used in fimber indusfries in 'fhe sfafe. Alfhough shorfleaf and loblolly pines furnish aboul' half of fhe lumber furnished in our sfafe, sweef gum and red and whife oak are fhe mosf valuable hardwood frees in fhe foresfs. lf has been claimed, and seems fo be frue, fhaf Arkansas has a greafer variefy of minerals 'lhan any ofher sfafe in fhe nafion. ln Magnef Cove alone fhere are abouf eighfy known min- erals. No where else has such a variefy of min- erals been found in such a small area. Ofher minerals found in our marvelous sfafe are oil and nafural gas. These minerals are found in fhe Soufhern parf of fhe sfafe, while coal beds can be found in The Arkansas valley. Because of ifs numerous and varied minerals, Arkansas has fruly won fhe fifle Wonder S'I'afe and in fhe same way Norfh Liffle Rock High has earned fhe righf fo be called one of fhe oufsfanding schools in 'rhe sfafe.
