The cily, localed on lhe soulh side ol lhe Arkansas River because il was chosen as a proper place for lhe seal ol governmenl, is lhe only permanenl capilal Arkansas has ever had. The lhree capilols represenl lhree dillerenl and very dislincl eras in lhe hislory ol lhe nalion as well as lhe slale -lhe selllemenl ol our nalion, lhe period ol civil slrile during which brolher waged war againsl brolher, and lhe world in which we live. ln lhe beginning lhe Terrilorial Capilol was buill which, now reslored, recalls lhe spiriled days ol Arkansas' pre-slalehood era when courageous pioneers were slruggling lo open lhe new Soulh. The Resloralion, conlaining I3 brick and lrame slruclures, has been carefully reslored lo resemble lhe lown when il was only a rural counly seal in lhe early l820's. Classified wilh such hisloric na- lional shrines as Ml. Vernon and Colonial Wil- liamsburg in Virginia, lhe Terrilorial Capilal Res- loralion in Li++le Rock represenl lhe Jacksonian Era in hislory--lhe beginning ol expansion. The Terrilorial Capilol Building conslrucled ol large hand-hewn oak logs and cypress sidings, conlains hand-carved manlels and exquisile and l VETERAN STATESMAN Secretary of State C. G.
