X, PA,,, FUREWORD When Neil Armstrong set his booted foot on the moon's dusty surface, man's viewpoint of his world changed decisively. No longer was he limit ed to viewing the moon from earth. Now man, through awesome techno- logical advances, could stand on the moon and gaze upon Earth. North Kitsap High School is a contributing part of this change through the space flights of Astronaut Richard Gordon, an NK graduate. Students became explorers too, combining fresh ideas with established ones to produce different concepts in all phases of school life. While viewpoints of students changed, so did the entire physical structure of the campus as it prepared for its transition to a four-year school. It is this year of change the 47th edition of the VIKING wishes to commemorate. The appearance of North fly had been altered drastically. Contractors had begun excavations in July. On opening day return- ing students were surprised at the new cluttered facade of building projects. Inside, a new air of discipline and the addition of study centers suggested a tighter regime. Sophomores suffered a psychological change. They were trans- formed from mighty ninth graders at the junior high to lowly high school tenth graders. However, a typical sophomore, Jeanette Klamke QZJ, was eager and ready for anything the '69-'70 school year could offer. The office was deluged by a- wave of confused or frustrated stu- dents like Dave King and Dave Rentola Gil seeking assistance during the first week. With the beginning of cross country, a new sport at North, am- bitious Dave Lyle Gil turned out to aid the team with his obvious record-breaking speed. Lunch showed senior girls Ann Fitzmaurice, Laina Nyland, Nancy Hawkey and Mary Benning Q53 undaunted by the trials of the first days of school. Assemblies played a vital role in keeping the spirit of NK at a peak, Displaying an inspiring amount of enthusiasm and support for the school and team, students at the first pep assembly 163 set an example to be matched throughout the year. Weather changed from summer sunshine to autumn rain earlier than usual. Making the best of a wet situation, industrious students honored Music Director John Castleman by dubbing a large mud puddle near the music building Castleman Lake. C71 They pro- hibited fishing, but declared open season on Drakes. l Seances and the supernatural overtook N, K, at the all-school play Blithe Spirit, presented to the public on the evening of November 14, The ever-increas- ing size of the audience indicated its enjoyment of the cast and play. The Noel Coward comedy was di- rected by Mr, Edgers. Completely filling one side of the bleachers, the capacity crowd at the 1969 Fall Concert was the largest N, K, has ever drawn to a performance of this type, North's talented groups presented three selections each, This event was the first of several annual concerts arranged and directed by Mr, Castleman. Ten couples, honored by the Class of '70 to be on the court, participated in the coronation assem- bly October 30, the day before Homecoming. The stage band played, and lights dimmed as seven formally attired couples entered the gym and took their places marked by spangled name cut-outs on the screens of the spe- cially designed dais. Viking Grows Up J Plans made by last year's staff to buy one good typewriter for yearbook class were voted aside in September by the 1970 staff. They elected to spend their extra S110 on eight pages of spot color. Changing publishers brought a larger book, In order to cover freshmen in 1971, staff asked ASB to raise the price of yearbooks. Emotions ranging from anger to fulfillment, and exhaustion plagued the editors during the year because deadlines coincided with concerts and term papers. Laura Gordanier 141, fearless Madam Editor, organized and encouraged staff members to make their deadlines. The expressions on the faces of the team members Q61 during half time reflected the all-out effort they put into their playing against their tough opponents. North players in 7 set up their offense against East's defense. As of February 25, the Varsity team had lost 19 out of the 20 games in the season. The Vikings found it rough going against bigger and more experienced teams in the Olympic AA league. They lost by overwhelming margins early in the season, but the margins narrowed by the nineteenth game. Their desire to break into the win column led them to fight the record as well as the team. The J, V. team sported a record which showed promise. They won several of the 20 games, but many games were lost by a margin of only a few points. Though short on manpower, they gave a good showing in every game. Injuries Cut Efficiency Of Wrestlers New Coach Roger Malfait, with the help of experienced wrestler Mike Berry, pulled together a wrestling team in November. Injuries soon thinned the ranks of a team which was not large to begin the season. Berry, Larry Nicodemus, David King and David Tinnin were laid up with breaks and sprains. Only three returning lettermen remained through the season. A team with only 14 members was faced with 24 bouts a match. That meant forfeiting 10 bouts at five points a bout each match. But the team worked hard practicing every night after school and occasionally on Saturdays. It won the first match of the season against Vashon, 31 to 23. After that, it was a down-hill road, but the matmen had the stamina to sec the season out. To change thc pace, Berry and Greg Prindle took a third and a fourth at the Regional Match at East Bremerton on February 14, In 411 Bruce Lang, Eric Prindle, Dave Lyle John Lawrence, Mike Pursey, Ernie Orwiler, Larry Nicodemus, Mike Boyle, Casey Minnerly fconcealed managerj, Greg Prindle and Coach Malfait watched a teammate competing. A Welcoming Committee was appointed by the ASB Ex- ecutive Board to greet new students and acquaint them with NK, Chairman Karla Treischel, Jim Forbes, Barbara Davies, Denise Cheatum and Betsy DeBoer 171, were part of the thirteen-member committee. Among the new stu- dents were Cathy and Lynn Scott. A revised constitution was drafted by the Constitution Committee 181, comprised of Clint Smith, Debbie Forbes, Sue Gurley, Kregg Hoover, and Rex Carlaw. Instead of being sponsored by individual clubs, the sock hops were managed by the ASB Dance Com- mittee, headed by chairman Sue Haskin. Home- coming became glorified when the Senior Class improved the eoronation ritual and left the Queen's robe and a float trophy for future classes to use. Seniors also set a high standard for academic achievement for underclassmen. A record num- ber qualified for the Honor Roll for the first semester. The tradition of the Senior Ball was changed this year, too. On May 3, couples attended a combination banquet and dance at the new Silverdale restaurant, the Poplars. But members of the Class of 1970 really returned to school in the fall with one thought in mind: , Commencement Day. On June 5, the largest Senior Class, and an innovative one, marched up the aisle--not in blue and white, but in purple and gold gowns--to receive their diplomas. In the chilly, early morning hours of January 3, Captain Richard Gordon, rode triumphantly through the main street of Poulsbo. Following the showing of a film about the Apollo 12 flight, the Apollo 12 Command Module Pilot and his entourage received honors from civic organizations and answered questions in the N ,K. gym. Gordon spoke of the mementos which crew members were allowed to take on Apollo flights, To the delight of the entire audience, he presented student body President Jerry Yeager fly with an American flag which had sailed with the INTREPID to the Sea of Storms, Moon, in November of 1969. During a small reception in the multi-purpose room, Lora Christiansen and cheerleaders 12p Pam Harlan, Connie Moshner, Cindy Darling, Pam Strand and Molly Epperson posed with their favorite astronaut after giving him a Welcome cheer. VIKING Editors Jerry Yeager and Laura Gordanier 133 exchanged a few words with Captain Gordon. Gordon signs his well-known name Q43 on Carol Ba1e's paper plate.
