SINGING STUDENTS Gee, what a swell uniform The Chorus program, led by Mr. Higby, is designed to give all students the opportu- nity to sing. The group is open to all students who wish to improve their singing skills. The class provides the background needed for the students to move on to higher levels of music. Singing theories, scales, and techniques are just a few of the abilities the students learn. Besides participating in the Christmas and Spring concerts each year, the Chorus also competes in the South County Choral Festival at U.R.I. The hard work and dedi- cation each student is expected to demon- strate has made this group a strong starting point in the NKHS music department. L. Allen, M. Bunker, T. Charesl, j. Cheseboro, S. TALENTED MUSICIANS AT THEIR BEST Our coolest sax player The 1986-1987 jazz Ensemble lohn enjoys his music I wish I could read music This year's )azz Ensemble, directed by Mr. Pelosi, continued its tradition of tremendous success. The talent this group possess is not limited to just playing music. Each member of the Jazz Ensemble must be able to sight read music, interpret different styles of jazz, as well as learn to perform improvisation. Besides the annual four concerts played each year, the Jazz Ensemble also partici- pated in music festivals at Berklee and the University of N.H. They also performed in the state festival in West Warwick. The N KHS Jazz Ensemble, being one of the best bands in New England, placed a first or second in all of their performances. The dedication and talent needed to es- tablish a superior reputation, as this group has, often leads to wider opportunities. This year many of the members of the Jazz Ensemble have received an All-State selec- tion for their talents. Although many of the members are seniors, and will be leaving next year, the potential still remaining in the Jazz Ensemble will continue to display their unique style and talent. Iazz Ensemble 21

Worthy You can stop singing now, Dana. Our lead soprano? The NKHS Concert Choir, led by Mr. Higby, was very successful again this year. The members are selected by audition only and are required to compete throughout the year. This year the Choir traveled to Stonington, Conn, to perform with five other choirs. They also went to Wash- ington, D.C. to participate in a national competition. Non-competitively, the Concert Choir performed at two parade services, two annual concerts, and performances at Class Day and Graduation. The Choir also performed for the Business and Professional Club early in the year. One of their most popular events was the Festival of Lights House Tour held in Wickford at Christmas. The dedication and talent in this group is shown by their active contributions to the community. This year, several students were accepted into the R.l. All-State Chorus, and two students went to the All- Eastern Chorus in Baltimore, Maryland. Although Mr. Higby as well as the seniors will be gone next year, the Choir will con- tinue to represent a strong part of NKHS's excellent music program. Concert Choir 23
