NORTH KINGSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL NORTH KINGSTOWN, RHODE ISLAND I 1969 SKIPPER'S LOG SEA-FEVER I MUST go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face and a grey dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull’s Way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over. A four-year voyage had been planned for us, a trip of the unknown which had been traveled successfully by others. Our journey would be more outstanding than all the rest. ONCE WE WERE FRESHMEN—AWED BY NOVELTY, AWKWARD WITH APPREHENSION—CONTEMPLATING THE IMMORTAL DAY WHEN INSIG- NIFICANCE WOULD BE REWARDED. Following the traditions of previous envoys we asked Mrs. Goodwin if she would act as our navigator. Later, ship’s officers were elected: Captain, James Baker; First Mate, Dwight Justice; Communications Officer, Barbara Millard; Purser, .Mary Ellen Thomas and Master at Arms, Paul Gurnon. Our first ship’s banner was selected as blue and tan. To raise money we held a bake sale, a car wash, and sold all-occasion cards. In the spring, we sponsored a dance. ONCE WE WERE SOPHOMORES—ESTABLISHED IN ROUTINE, MEN OF THE WORLD—FLATTERING OURSELVES WITH PRAISES OF INCIPIENT KNOWL- EDGE. New officers were appointed: Captain, James Baker; First Mate, Don Marge; Com- munications Officer, Barbara Millard; Purser, Russ Carmen; and Master at Arms, Paul Gurnon. A new banner of red and white was chosen as our permanent identification. Our persuasive and confident air was valuable in selling stationery and brown with white N. K. sweatshirts. A bottle drive and bake sale were successful contributions to our treasury. Our biggest project of the year was the class play, Butter on the Bacon.” We held rehearsals, rehearsals, and more rehearsals, and finally on May 26 and 27 we were ready. Our stars were Kerry Brown, Pat Young, and Dwight Justice. To end a very ambitious year we sponsored our last project, a sophomore dance on June 17, 1967. ONCE WE WERE JUNIORS—HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED, IMMODEST LITTLE CREATURES—BASKING IN THE SECURITY OF AN ABEYANCE INSECURE. Our junior year brought with it our class rings and the feeling of superiority as upperclassmen. A complete change of command was selected: John Ogren, Captain; Susan Vitko, First Mate; Barbara Sherman, Communications Officer; Debbie Ryan, Purser; and Greg Taylor, Master at Arms. But our navigator’s tour of duty was cut short and a new one had to be chosen. Mr. Brodin seemed to be an able-bodied seaman and later proved to be so. Selling stationery seemed a successful project to take on to raise money, along with our annual bake sale. Both tasks were examples of our class unity and spirit. We felt that North Kingstown High needed an additional tra- dition so we had a Christmas semi-formal in the hope that each year the junior class would sponsor a similar event. The entertainment was provided by The Others” and our queen was Jill Butler. Our class play, The Chalk Garden,” was a success, both financially and psychologically. Linda Morgan made each member of the audience take notice with her ultra-real screams. At the same time, another industrious group was planning our Junior Prom to be held at the Quidnesset Country Club. Many hours were spent making palm trees and hanging a huge fish net from the ceiling. Barbara Millard was crowned queen. ONCE WE WERE SENIORS—SLIGHTLY PROUD, RATHER RELIEVED— DREAMING OF AN AGE THAT TIME SO BOLDLY ROBBED. 90 Our Senior year—when we thought ourselves on the top, the oldest and wishfully the wisest—had come upon us all too soon. Our officers were to be the last for the class of '69, the ones to lead us through the concluding miles of our voyage. They were all experienced seamen: Captain, Greg Taylor; First Mate, Susan Vitko; Communications Officer, Barbara Sherman; Purser, Debbie Ryan and Master at Arms, Paul Gurnon. The Senior Class of 1969 set the pace for a socially active year. We were first to have a soc-hop. In the fall a very successful magazine drive was held, the most prosperous of any ever held at our high school. The total sales came to $4,500 and our goal was not much higher. We began work on the second volume of the Senior News with Ellen McCarthy as the editor. The last play for the class of ’69 was held on November 8 and 9- The play, The Mouse Trap” by Agatha Christie, featured our shining actors, Linder Morgan, Bill Young, and Kerry Brown. Many hard working hours went into the production of this play by both students and our faculty director, Mrs. Pinet. In Febru- ary we sponsored a Valentine’s Day semi-formal with a beau- tiful Queen of Hearts. Our Senior Prom was held on May 3, 1969 at the Yankee Motor Inn. This was one of the last events of our high school career and by far the most spec- tacular. Before long the whole class went into its biggest and most important rehearsal of all—Graduation. Four years of growing up, fun, hard work for ourselves and for our class, along with frustration and discouragement were soon to be only memories. ONCE WE WERE ALL THESE, JUST ONCE, BUT NEVER MORE. In Memory of William Raymond Hannegan May, 1950—November, 1966 If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, Open your heart wide into the body of life. For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance. Farewell to you and the youth I have spent with you. Children today—tomorrow—men! A few more suns and moons and then Long limbed and sinewy they stand The manhood of our native land. Show them the dignity of toil; Give them the mother-touch of'soil: Teach them the cunning of the tool A$ well as riddles of the school.
