Skipper’s Cog 1965 I NORTH KINGSTOWN SENIOR North Kingstown, Rhode pue|S| lOOHDS H9IH Bounded on three sides by turbulent, blue-green ocean, the lighthouse stands as a beacon for the many men who find themselves drawn to the sea. These seafarers have been attracted to the water for varied reasons ranging from national defense to pleasure boating; yet each relies on the rays from the same white tower to provide safety, security, and a sense of peace. In a similar manner, the North Kingstown High School serves as a guide in our pursuit of learning. The beams of truth, honor, and knowledge will hopefully provide each North Kingstown High Skipper with adequate preparation for what lies beyond. ✓V Table of Contents Administration and Faculty................7 Seniors...................... Juniors......................73 Sophomores...................79 Freshmen.....................87 Superlatives.................95 Organizations and Activities...........101 Sports......................125 Every student at North Kingstown High School is very much indebted to the members of our School Committee. They spend many hours work- ing to maintain and improve the quality of edu- cation in North Kingstown. The staff of the 1965 Skipper’s Log takes this opportunity to say a sincere thank you to: Mr. Kenneth Fletcher, Chairman Mr. Fred Mead, Clerk Mr. Henry Hutler Mrs. Frank Cants Mr. Howard Gardiner Dr. Stanley Van Wagner Mrs. Philip Willis 8 Superintendent It is a happy privilege for me to extend to the members of the Class of 1965, North Kingstown High School, both greetings and good wishes for the years ahead. We regret very much that circumstances over which we have little control precludes our knowledge of many of you as individuals, but rather only as a class, the larg- est senior class in the history of North Kingstown public education. It is almost certain that this particular statistic will continue to be repeated, many, many times. As individual members of the Class of 1965, I hope that you will take with you after graduation, pleasant memories of the time you have spent at North Kings- town High School. Try to remember always that if at times the going was not as smooth as you thought it should have been, your teachers, principal, and guidance counselors were only striving to make certain that you would obtain your high school diploma, which, in turn would lead to further opportunities for each of you. Now for the first time in our Nation’s history, our Na- tional leaders are taking positive steps to insure that every American young man and young woman can develop their full potential in every respect. Great programs are in the making which should open doors of opportunity never be- fore considered possible. Each of you in some way or degree will become involved in this great movement and in doing so may you fulfill our fondest hopes and wishes for your happiness and success in life. Sincerely, Hiram A. Davis Asst. Superintendent BURTON FROBERG B.S.; M.S.Ed. University of Rhode Island 9 Principal Another graduating class and another record-breaking number of graduates! This year, as in several preceding ones, records ha e been made in both academic and other school activity areas and it is my hope that North Kings- town will continue to be increasingly active in the years to come so that each specific year will show our school progressing towards better and more complete academic and non-academic offerings. To the graduates, may I extend for the Faculty, congratu- lations upon your successful completion of high school and to the Yearbook Staff, and your advisor, Mrs. Hawkin- son, commendation for the arrangement and contents of the yearbook. To each of you individually, I sincerely hope that you will in later years achieve the goal which you have set for yourself and that you will always remember that your high school is ever mindful ami proud of your accomplish- ments. Lettermen's Club 4. 59 Class Advisors 60 One great )ear is over, a year full of fun and new experiences. I was lucky to be able to come to your school, to find friends here, and to be- come one of you. The greatest experience, I think, was to learn that we are not different at all. except that we speak a different language. I learned much about your country and 1 hope you have learned a little hit about mine. I shall always re- member the ten months I spent here at our school. Finally 1 would like to thank all the teachers for the help they gave me I not only in my school work I and I would especially like to thank all the stu- dents who accepted me from the first day. Our Guest From Germany 61 June 1962 Dear Mary Lou. Wow! This was an odd hut exciting year to say the least. It all started last September. We started our high school career with the largest freshman class in the history of N.K.H.S. In addition to the miseries of strange surroundings, we were put on double sessions. We soon became accustomed to it though and began to like our unique school days which started at 12:30 P.M. and ended at 5:30 P.M. After the confusion subsided a bit, Mr. Morris and Mr. Cunningham were presented to our class as advisors. We then preceded to choose our class officers who were: President Steve Wagner; Vice-President, Cecilia Humphry; Secretary. Nancy Warner: Treasurer. Brian Chandler: and Marshal. Mike Newman. We chose temporary colors of purple and white until we could get green and white, which were the colors of the graduating seniors. Inspired with the fire of success, we forged on to start our class activities. The big success of the year was our “Shipwreck” dance which started our treasury off quite nicely. We ended the year with certain members of the class acting as slaves at the Junior- Senior Prom, “Roman Holiday”. To be continued. Barbara Porter June 1963 Dear Mary Lou, Well, the class of “65” really started the ball rolling this year. Because we were no longer on double sessions, we really got a chance to dig in and participate in school affairs. We elected our officers who were; President Steve Wagner; Vice- President Fay Hallene; Secretary Nancy Warner; Treasurer Brian Chandler; and Marshal Mike Newman. Headed by our class advisor, Mr. Morris, we started off the year sponsoring a dance which was quite successful. As Sophomores, we now got the class colors of green and white which became our permanent colors. One of the biggest events of the year was our spectacular production of “The Im- portance of Being Ernest”. Thanks to the fine directing of Mrs. Cabot and the help of student directors, Barbara Porter and Brian Chandler it was a great suc- cess. Following this, we sponsored our second dance, “Hawaiian Holiday”, which featured “dancers” from the class. The class really had a great time wrapping up the year with a class trip to Goddard Park which featured an exciting baseball game. To be continued, Barbara Porter June 1964 Dear Mary Lou, What a great feeling to be an upperclassman with a new class ring to prove it. We started the year electing Steve W'agner as President; Peter Williams, first Vice-President; Ruth Gobeille, second Vice-President; Barbara Porter, Secretary; Brian Chandler, Treasurer; and Bob Carlson, Marshal. Mr. Morris and Mr. Charon were our advisors for this year. This year was great for its class participation. “The Lottery,” our one-act play, was directed by Miss Clark and student directors, Barbara Porter and Bob Carlson. The play was a great success. Peter Williams, first Vice-President, was chairman of a very enjoyable variety- show which featured many class talents. I know the class will never forget our beautiful prom “Chanson D’Amour which was headed by the second Vice-President, Ruth Gobeille. Many months of hard work was well rewarded by the prom and the evening’s other activities spon- sored by the Senior class. To be continued, Barbara Porter June 196 ) Dear Mary Lou. Seniors at last! In our last year at .K. we started the year with a new class advisor. Mr. Charon, since Mr. Morris had left the Senior High to teach at the elementary level. Dennis Marge was elected President; Chris Shuster, Vice-Presi- dent; Barbara Porter. Secretary; Brian Chandler. Treasurer: and Richard Burda. Marshal. Homeroom representatives were chosen because of the lack of sufficient room for meetings of the whole class. Excitement was running high as members of the class started working fever- ishly on projects to raise mone for the Washington Trip. February came at last and we embarked on our exciting trip to Washington which was a complete blast! We, Seniors were really busy planning commencement and managing to keep the school fires burning. Hearty thanks were given by all to Mrs. Hawkinson and the yearbook staff who produced the greatest Skipper’s Log yet. As we passed out of our dearly beloved halls of N.K.H.S. I know many a tear was shed as we thought back on all the wonderful experiences of our high school years. Until the reunion. Barbara Porter 66 Class Will We, Norman Newberry. The musicians have been chosen from all sections of the United States and they will spend most of the summer playing a series of concerts throughout the continent. ANTHONY C. PERRY, Director of Athletics There is a great deal that can be said about athletics. Athletics today, really are not accepted as part of education by many people. However, athletics have proved conclusively that, given wise guidance and emphasis upon sound value, it could make a major contribution to the development of the citizen and leadership traits necessary to the strength and possibly the survival of our democratic way of life. One of the central aims is that athletics be an integral part of the education program of the school. The basic educational areas which have been established as sound outcomes of athletics are ethical and moral character, physical and emotional health, and a strong motivation force to mental excellence. Basically, the competitive athletic program is an opportunity for the exceptional student to develop his superior resources and to measure himself against others. The benefits to the individual are many. He learns what real competition is. He discovers the rewards of contributing to the team effort. In winning or losing, he gains an understanding of life itself. A good athletic program also unites the student body, the alumni, and the public. At North Kingstown High School our athletic program sponsors eight major sports with approximately 33% of the male enrollment participating. 126 Varsity Sports FIRST ROW: Coach Don Brown, Joe Bullock, Charles Gifford, Buddy Barger, Tom Carthy, Co-Captains Norm Teague, and Denny Marge, Gene Kistler, Steve Potter, Bi Smith, Gordy McElhaney, Randy Smith.
