A familiar face on the campus last year was Mr. Crosdale. Volleyball . . . tennis . . . flirting . . . frog races ... de- tention . . .teaching Keeping busy with all these activities, he still had time to get us started on the ’64 Skipper’s Log. For this reason we, the yearbook staff, wish to express our appreciation to Mr. William Crosdale.

It was not so long ago and well within the memory of some of your parents and teachers, that it was a privilege for a boy or a girl to grad- uate from high school. The social and economic levels of our country then were such that it was generally necessary for a boy, in particular, to leave school at fifteen or sixteen years of his life to take a job in a mill or mercantile business to help support his family. It was a rare circumstance for the average girl, if she completed high school, to be able to go on to college. All that, fortuitously, has changed. Today it is a rare circumstance to find any boy or girl of fifteen or sixteen years of age and average intelligence who has not completed two, three or even four years of high school education. J8 Despite this great stride made in our American educational oppor- tunities, it is frustrating and a great source of dismay to teachers and school officials alike to be made aware of the continuing and increas- ing numbers of drop-outs” in our high schools throughout the country. Automation and other improved wrays of producing goods and serv- ices for the American way of life require an increasing need for more involved skills and technical knowledge than ever before. This makes it absolutely necessary for youth to have a minimum of a high school education to qualify for practically any job which they may be seeking. Without a high school diploma, it is a foregone conclusion that all possibility for a college education has been dissipated. So, I would strongly and sincerely urge each one now attending North Kingstown High School or who may transfer from here to a school else- where, to pursue your course of study diligently and with true purpose. Think twice and twice again before you yield to an urge to drop-out” of school. You may become a very unhappy statistic on the rolls of un- employed or unemployables in the future. 8
